Job Description

Looking for an experienced Senior Instrumentation & Control Maintenance Technician to support instrumentation and control maintenance activities across Oil & Gas, refinery, petrochemical, gas processing, and industrial facilities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for independently carrying out preventive, corrective, breakdown, calibration, troubleshooting, testing, commissioning, and maintenance activities for field instrumentation and control systems.

The role requires strong hands-on experience with transmitters, control valves, analyzers, DCS, PLC, ESD/SIS, SCADA, on/off valves, instrumentation loops, and associated control equipment. The Senior Technician will also provide technical guidance to junior technicians and coordinate maintenance activities with engineers, supervisors, operations, electrical, and mechanical teams.

Key Responsibilities

Instrumentation Maintenance & Calibration

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on all types of pressure, flow, temperature, level, and analytical instruments.
  • Independently troubleshoot, calibrate, repair, inspect, and test field instrumentation.
  • Carry out maintenance of pressure transmitters, differential pressure transmitters, flow transmitters, temperature transmitters, level transmitters, switches, gauges, control valves, on/off valves, analyzers, and associated instrumentation.
  • Perform calibration using multimeters, loop calibrators, HART communicators, pressure calibrators, temperature calibrators, signal generators, and other test equipment.
  • Conduct calibration and functional testing in accordance with approved procedures and manufacturer specifications.
  • Identify instrument failures and determine appropriate corrective actions.

DCS, PLC & Control System Maintenance

  • Perform troubleshooting and maintenance of DCS, PLC, SCADA, RTU, and instrumentation control loops.
  • Carry out loop checking, signal verification, continuity checks, I/O verification, and functional testing.
  • Troubleshoot 4–20 mA, HART, digital, and control signals.
  • Support engineers during DCS/PLC modifications, system upgrades, migrations, and commissioning activities.
  • Assist in troubleshooting communication and interface issues between field instruments and control systems.
  • Familiarity with systems such as Emerson, Honeywell, Yokogawa, Siemens, ABB, Schneider, or similar platforms is preferred.

Control Valve & Final Control Element Maintenance

  • Perform inspection, troubleshooting, testing, and maintenance of control valves, actuators, positioners, solenoid valves, pneumatic systems, and on/off valves.
  • Calibrate and troubleshoot smart valve positioners and I/P converters.
  • Carry out valve stroke testing and functional checks.
  • Support control valve overhauling, servicing, installation, and commissioning activities.
  • Identify valve-related process and control problems and recommend corrective action.

ESD, SIS & Safety Instrumented Systems

  • Maintain and troubleshoot Emergency Shutdown (ESD), Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), Fire & Gas systems, alarms, trips, and interlocks.
  • Perform functional testing of critical safety instrumentation under approved procedures.
  • Support proof testing and verification of safety-related instruments and loops.
  • Ensure safety systems remain operational and compliant with site requirements.
  • Maintain proper records of testing, calibration, and maintenance activities.

Analyzer & Specialized Instrumentation

  • Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of process analyzers and associated sample conditioning systems.
  • Support maintenance of gas analyzers, oxygen analyzers, pH, conductivity, hydrocarbon, moisture, and other process measurement systems.
  • Troubleshoot analyzer signal, calibration, sampling, and communication problems.
  • Assist in analyzer calibration and functional testing according to approved procedures.

Troubleshooting & Breakdown Maintenance

  • Independently attend instrumentation breakdowns and emergency maintenance activities.
  • Diagnose faults using appropriate test equipment, drawings, manuals, and diagnostic tools.
  • Conduct systematic fault-finding and root cause analysis.
  • Restore failed instrumentation and control systems safely and efficiently.
  • Participate in plant shutdowns, turnarounds, maintenance campaigns, and emergency response activities.
  • Provide technical recommendations to engineers and supervisors regarding recurring equipment failures.

Installation, Commissioning & Modification

  • Support installation and commissioning of new instrumentation and control systems.
  • Perform loop checking, point-to-point testing, continuity testing, calibration, signal verification, and functional testing.
  • Assist with instrument installation, tubing, impulse lines, junction boxes, marshalling panels, and control panels.
  • Support modification, replacement, retrofit, and upgrading of instrumentation systems.
  • Read and interpret P&IDs, instrument index, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, hook-up drawings, cable schedules, and datasheets.

Preventive & Corrective Maintenance

  • Execute planned PM and CM activities according to approved maintenance schedules.
  • Identify defective instruments and recommend replacement or repair.
  • Ensure maintenance activities are completed within the required schedule and quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, calibration certificates, inspection reports, and equipment history.
  • Support maintenance planning and spare-parts requirements.

Safety & Compliance

  • Strictly follow HSE policies, PTW, LOTO, JSA, risk assessments, toolbox talks, and safe work procedures.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are performed safely and in accordance with site and client requirements.
  • Follow hazardous-area and electrical/instrumentation safety requirements.
  • Maintain safe working practices when working at height, in confined spaces, and in hazardous areas.
  • Participate in safety meetings, inspections, audits, emergency drills, and incident investigations when required.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE and approved tools and equipment.

Team Leadership & Coordination

  • Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to junior instrumentation technicians.
  • Coordinate daily maintenance activities with supervisors, engineers, operations, electrical, and mechanical teams.
  • Assist in planning manpower, tools, materials, and equipment for maintenance activities.
  • Review completed work and ensure quality standards are maintained.
  • Communicate equipment abnormalities and maintenance requirements clearly to supervisors and engineers.
  • Take responsibility for assigned maintenance activities and complete tasks independently.

Required Skills & Technical Knowledge

  • Strong hands-on knowledge of industrial instrumentation and control systems.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Good knowledge of pressure, flow, temperature, level, and analytical instrumentation.
  • Experience with DCS, PLC, SCADA, ESD/SIS, Fire & Gas, and control loops.
  • Good knowledge of control valves, actuators, positioners, solenoid valves, and I/P converters.
  • Proficiency in using HART communicators, loop calibrators, multimeters, pressure calibrators, temperature calibrators, and signal generators.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, instrument datasheets, and technical drawings.
  • Understanding of 4–20 mA, HART, digital signals, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Strong knowledge of instrumentation maintenance procedures and calibration practices.
  • Good understanding of Oil & Gas process and plant safety requirements.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.

Educational Qualifications

  • Diploma or Associate Degree in Instrumentation, Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Relevant instrumentation and control certifications are an advantage.
  • Manufacturer or industry certifications such as Emerson, Honeywell, Yokogawa, Siemens, ABB, Schneider, ISA, or equivalent are preferred.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 5–8 years of relevant hands-on experience in Instrumentation & Control maintenance.
  • Previous experience in Oil & Gas, refinery, petrochemical, gas processing, LNG/LPG, or related industrial facilities is strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience independently performing PM, CM, calibration, troubleshooting, breakdown maintenance, loop checking, and functional testing.
  • Experience working during shutdowns, turnarounds, commissioning, and maintenance campaigns is highly desirable.
  • Previous experience in a senior technician or team-lead capacity is preferred.
  • UAE/GCC Oil & Gas experience will be an advantage.
