Job Description

Job Summary

A Marine Electrician installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical and electronic systems on vessels and marine structures. The role covers power distribution, lighting, control systems, navigation/communication support wiring, and equipment commissioning—ensuring all work meets marine safety standards, class requirements, and customer specifications.


Key Responsibilities

  • Install, terminate, and test marine cabling: power, control, instrumentation, and communication wiring.

  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, GA drawings, and job cards.

  • Perform cable routing through trays/conduits, gland entry, penetrations, and watertight seals.

  • Terminate cables using lugs, ferrules, crimping tools, heat-shrink, and proper labeling/identification systems.

  • Install and service electrical equipment such as:

    • switchboards, distribution panels, breakers, motor starters/VFDs

    • lighting systems, emergency lighting, batteries/chargers, shore power connections

    • pumps, motors, HVAC electrical, alarms and monitoring systems

  • Troubleshoot faults using multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers (megger), and continuity testing.

  • Conduct insulation resistance tests, earth/ground checks, polarity checks, and functional testing.

  • Support commissioning and sea-trial readiness: energization checks, loop checks, start-up and shutdown testing.

  • Maintain compliance with LOTO (lockout/tagout) and safe isolation procedures.

  • Identify defects (loose terminations, damaged insulation, corrosion) and perform corrective repairs.

  • Coordinate with mechanical, HVAC, and instrumentation teams to ensure system integration.

  • Maintain tools, test equipment, and work area housekeeping; document work completed.


Required Skills & Competencies

  • Solid understanding of AC/DC systems, marine power distribution, grounding/earthing, and load protection.

  • Strong troubleshooting ability and methodical approach to fault-finding.

  • Practical experience with cable pulling, glanding, sealing, and termination quality.

  • Knowledge of marine safety and standards (depending on employer): SOLAS, IEC/IEEE practices, class rules.

  • Comfortable working in shipyard/onboard conditions: confined spaces, tight routes, and at heights.


Qualifications

  • Technical diploma/ITI or equivalent in Electrical/Electromechanical (preferred).

  • Marine electrical experience in shipyards, offshore, commercial vessels, or yachts preferred.

  • Certifications are a plus (as applicable):

    • LOTO / Electrical Safety

    • Confined Space Entry, Working at Height

    • Basic firefighting / HSE induction

    • Class/yard-specific competency approvals
