Wood Joinery Specialist

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Role Purpose

Engineer, fabricate, finish, deliver, and install doors, wardrobes, kitchens, vanities, skirting/architraves, wall panels, counters, handrails and related timber works per approved drawings/specifications—achieving durable, code-compliant, high-finish results—while meeting programme, quality, and HSE requirements and accounting for Sharjah weather and traffic/logistics constraints.

Typical Scope (Category-3 G+3)

  • Internal doors (standard & fire-rated where specified), frames, architraves, ironmongery, door closers/stops/seals.

  • Casework: kitchen/vanity units, wardrobes, shelving, reception counters.

  • Finishes: HPL/laminate, veneer with PU/lacquer, melamine, solid wood trims, MR MDF for wet areas; edge banding.

  • Accessories: skirting, thresholds, handrails/guard trims, window boards.

  • Specials: acoustic/feature wall panels (as specified).

Key Responsibilities

    Engineering & Submittals

  • Produce shop drawings, cutting lists, hardware schedules, and finish schedules; coordinate builder’s work (backing, blocking, openings).

  • Submit samples/mock-ups (veneer match, color, sheen, laminate types, hardware) and material compliance data; obtain approvals.

  • For fire-rated doors, provide certification, leaf/frame/ironmongery compatibility, intumescent seals, and installation method statements per code.

    Fabrication & Finishing (Workshop)

  • Fabricate to tolerance: squareness, flatness, uniform reveals; control moisture content; edge band and seal all cut faces.

  • Apply finishes (PU/lacquer/paint) to specified DFT/sheen; ensure color consistency and dust-free surfaces.

  • Trial-fit hardware; pre-hang doors/frames where feasible; label parts for traceability.

    Site Installation

  • Verify site readiness: plaster/paint levels, floor finished levels/thresholds, MEP clearances, waterproofing in wet areas.

  • Install frames/leafs, casework, panels, and trims plumb/level/true; fix with approved anchors/adhesives; protect interfaces.

  • Fit and adjust hardware (hinges, locks, closers, seals, stops) to smooth operation; maintain fire/smoke seal continuity where required.

  • Seal joints (silicone/PU) neatly; protect finished items until handover.

    QA/QC & Documentation

  • Work to ITPs/method statements; arrange MIR/WIR inspections.

  • Check tolerances: gap/reveal consistency, door swing/clearance, linearity of panels, alignment with adjacent finishes.

  • Maintain registers: material batches, hardware sets, finish codes, fire-door certificates, snag/closure logs, and as-built updates.

    HSE

  • Workshop: guards on saws/routers, dust extraction, hearing/eye/respiratory protection, safe lifting.

  • Site: working-at-height for high panels, sharp-tool handling, cable management, LOTO near live electrical works, housekeeping.

    Programme & Coordination

  • Sequence after wet trades and before final painting touch-ups; coordinate with MEP for cut-outs/clearances (sockets, plumbing, appliances).

  • Align deliveries/installation by floor-zone to avoid damage and re-handling; protect completed zones.

Weather & Traffic Considerations (Sharjah/UAE)

  • Heat & Humidity:

    • Acclimatize timber/MDF/laminate and finished items on site before installation to minimize warping.

    • Store materials and finishes in shade, ventilated, dry areas; avoid direct sun on finished surfaces.

    • Schedule heavy handling/finishing early morning/evening; comply with MOHRE summer midday break.

    • Expect extended cure times for PU/lacquer/adhesives; control indoor humidity/temperature prior to final coats.

  • Dust/Sand:

    • Use dust barriers; keep storage/installation areas clean; wipe bonding/finishing faces immediately before fixing.

    • Protect hinges/runners/locks from grit; maintain clean spray/finishing zones.

  • Occasional Rain/Coastal Influence:

    • Protect deliveries from moisture; avoid installing on damp substrates; use MR MDF and corrosion-resistant hardware where specified.

  • Traffic & Logistics:

    • Plan off-peak deliveries of large modules; use banksmen for off-loading; obtain SRTA/Police permits if curbside unloading affects roads.

    • Stage materials near work fronts without overloading slabs; maintain clear egress and inspection routes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 7–10+ years joinery/casework experience (UAE/GCC preferred) on residential/commercial projects.

  • Proficient with laminates/veneers/solid wood, carcass/carcass-less systems, precision hardware fitting, and site finishing/touch-ups.

  • Demonstrated competency with fire-rated door systems and documentation (where specified).

  • Able to read drawings/levels; basic English for coordination (Arabic/Urdu/Hindi an advantage).

Tools & Equipment (Typical)

Table/mitre/band saws, routers, edge bander, planer/thicknesser, drill/drivers, biscuit/dowel/domino joiners, clamps, sanders with extraction, spray guns & booth, sealant guns, levels/laser, PPE (gloves, goggles, respirator, hearing protection).

Core Competencies

  • Fine finish quality & tolerance control

  • Veneer/laminate matching and neat detailing

  • Hardware integration & smooth operation

  • Moisture/heat management and protection of works

  • Documentation rigor and cross-trade coordination

KPIs

  • First-time pass on WIRs; tolerance/finish acceptance without rework.

  • Low snag/DLP call-back rate (warping, delamination, hardware faults).

  • Programme adherence by zone; minimal damage from/ to adjacent trades.

  • Fire-door certification and installation accepted on first submission (where applicable).

  • Zero lost-time incidents; compliance with midday break and site traffic plan.
