The Junior Welding Inspector supports quality assurance activities related to welding fabrication in both field installations and fabrication shop settings. Under the supervision of senior inspectors, this role assists with visual inspections, documentation, and code compliance verification, primarily on welded assemblies for water and wastewater treatment infrastructure. This is an ideal entry-level position for a CWI-certified individual starting a career in welding inspection.
Assist in conducting visual weld inspections on piping, tanks, skids, and pressure components fabricated for water treatment systems.
Monitor weld preparation, joint fit-up, and in-process welding activities to ensure adherence to approved WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications).
Document weld sizes, types, and identification marks per inspection requirements.
Help verify conformance to applicable codes such as ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, and AWWA/ANSI standards.
Record and track welders’ qualifications and traceability logs.
Support the maintenance of welding inspection records, including weld maps, NCRs (Non-Conformance Reports), and weld log sheets.
Assist in preparing inspection reports and turnover documentation for project closeout.
Help coordinate with third-party NDT personnel and log test results.
Follow all jobsite and shop safety protocols including PPE, confined space, and hot work procedures.
Learn to interpret weld symbols, isometric drawings, and P&IDs with guidance from senior inspectors.
Participate in training and mentoring sessions to grow inspection capabilities.
Visual weld inspections and weld documentation
Learning QA/QC processes and standards in water infrastructure projects
Supporting field/shop inspections with focus on safety and code compliance
Education:
High school diploma or GED required
Technical training in welding or inspection preferred
Certifications:
AWS CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) – Required
Additional safety training (OSHA 10, confined space, etc.) preferred
Experience:
0–2 years of experience in welding inspection or fabrication environments
Hands-on welding or QA background in water treatment or industrial sectors a plus
Skills:
Basic understanding of welding processes (SMAW, TIG, MIG, FCAW)
Familiarity with weld symbols and inspection checklists
Good observational, documentation, and communication skills
Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn from senior inspectors
