Roles & Responsibilities

The Vice President of Operations – Steam/Boiler Plants is responsible for the end-to-end operational management of boiler plants and associated utility systems. This executive role ensures safe, reliable, and efficient steam generation to support plant processes while driving continuous improvement in performance, compliance, and cost-efficiency. The VP will oversee plant operations, maintenance, staff performance, and asset optimization, while aligning with long-term business goals and sustainability objectives.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage all aspects of steam and boiler plant operations, ensuring optimal performance, uptime, and efficiency.

  • Oversee the safe and compliant operation of high-pressure steam boilers, pressure vessels, and auxiliary systems (e.g., feedwater, fuel handling, condensate recovery).

  • Develop and implement strategies for energy efficiency, cost optimization, reliability improvement, and emission reduction.

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and safety codes (e.g., ASME, NFPA, OSHA, ISO, IBR).

  • Direct planning, scheduling, and execution of preventive and corrective maintenance, shutdowns, and overhauls.

  • Monitor and control OPEX and CAPEX budgets, and ensure alignment with business KPIs and operational targets.

  • Drive adoption of digital solutions, including SCADA/DCS, CMMS, energy monitoring, and predictive analytics.

  • Champion workforce development through structured training programs, SOP enhancements, and competency assessments.

  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams in engineering, quality, EHSS, and finance for integrated plant performance.

  • Serve as the executive point of contact for inspections, audits, client site visits, and government agencies.

  • Operational Excellence: Maximize uptime, steam efficiency, and operational safety.

  • Boiler Plant Optimization: Manage load demand, thermal efficiency, and emissions control.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain adherence to boiler operation standards, emission norms, and pressure vessel codes.

  • Energy & Cost Management: Optimize steam cost, fuel usage, and resource efficiency.

  • Maintenance Strategy: Drive proactive asset care using condition-based and predictive maintenance practices.

  • Workforce & Safety: Cultivate a safety-first culture and ensure high technical competency across operations teams.

  • Digital & Automation: Utilize SCADA, AI/ML, and IoT platforms for smart plant operations.


Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical/Power Engineering or related field (mandatory)

    • Master’s Degree in Engineering Management or MBA (preferred)

  • Certifications (Preferred):

    • Certified Boiler Operation Engineer (BOE) or First-Class Boiler Certification (as per jurisdiction)

    • ASME Section I & VIII knowledge

    • PMP or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) (optional)

  • Experience:

    • 20+ years in boiler/steam plant operations, including 10+ years in senior/executive management roles

    • Proven experience leading utility/energy operations in large-scale plants (industrial, refinery, or power generation)

    • Strong track record in turnaround management, performance optimization, and cross-functional leadership

  • Skills:

    • In-depth knowledge of boiler operation, thermal systems, and pressure part maintenance

    • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational capabilities

    • Expertise in safety, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance

    • Analytical mindset with the ability to use data for decision-making and performance improvement
