VP of Energy and Utilities (Boilers/Steam Plants)

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The VP of Energy and Utilities (Boilers/Steam Plants) is responsible for the strategic, operational, and technical oversight of all energy and utility operations, with a strong focus on boiler systems, steam generation, and distribution. This role ensures optimal plant performance, energy efficiency, regulatory compliance, and safe, uninterrupted utility services across all facilities. The VP will lead multi-disciplinary teams, establish performance benchmarks, and drive utility infrastructure modernization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for the operation, maintenance, and optimization of boilers, steam plants, and auxiliary utility systems (cooling water, compressed air, HVAC, etc.).

  • Develop and implement a company-wide energy and utility management strategy, aligned with production, sustainability, and cost objectives.

  • Ensure all systems comply with national and international boiler and pressure vessel codes (e.g., ASME, IBR, NFPA).

  • Oversee the integrity, reliability, and safety of high-pressure steam systems and associated utility networks.

  • Drive energy efficiency initiatives, including steam loss reduction, heat recovery, and fuel optimization.

  • Lead capital projects related to boiler upgrades, utility expansions, and decarbonization efforts (e.g., transition to biomass, hydrogen, or waste heat recovery).

  • Monitor and analyze utility KPIs (steam-to-product ratios, boiler efficiency, downtime, fuel consumption) and ensure performance targets are met.

  • Collaborate with maintenance, engineering, production, and safety teams to ensure uninterrupted utility supply.

  • Engage with regulatory bodies, auditors, and certification agencies to ensure full compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

  • Lead budgeting, long-term infrastructure planning, and vendor/contractor performance management.

  • Champion digitalization and predictive technologies (e.g., SCADA, IoT, AI-based analytics) in utility operations.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Boiler and Steam Plant Operations: High-efficiency, low-emission operations, load balancing, and uptime maximization.

  • Utility Reliability: Continuous improvement of utility uptime and resilience planning.

  • Energy Optimization: Implementation of best practices for energy conservation and cost control.

  • Asset Integrity: Management of inspection, testing, and certification programs for boilers and pressure systems.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Adherence to environmental norms (e.g., emissions), safety codes, and pressure equipment standards.

  • Sustainability and Decarbonization: Strategic shift toward renewable fuels, energy recovery, and carbon footprint reduction.

  • Technology Adoption: Leveraging automation, AI, and real-time monitoring for predictive and prescriptive decision-making.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Power Engineering (mandatory)

    • Master’s Degree in Energy Management, Engineering Management, or MBA (preferred)

  • Certifications (Preferred):

    • Certified Boiler Operation Engineer (BOE)

    • ASME Section I, VIII compliance knowledge

    • Energy Auditor/Manager certification (e.g., BEE India, CEM)

    • ISO 50001 (Energy Management Systems)

  • Experience:

    • 20+ years in energy systems, utility operations, or steam plant environments

    • Minimum 8–10 years in senior/executive leadership roles

    • Experience managing large-scale utility networks, high-capacity boilers, and multi-site operations

  • Skills:

    • Strategic thinking with strong engineering fundamentals

    • Expertise in utility plant design, operation, and troubleshooting

    • Leadership in sustainability, green energy, and energy transition initiatives

    • Strong analytical, communication, and cross-functional leadership skills
