Job Title: Turbine Rigger

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Turbine Rigger is responsible for overseeing and executing turbine rigging, installation, and maintenance operations in industrial settings. This role requires a solid understanding of turbine systems, rigging procedures, and safety protocols. The Mid-Level Turbine Rigger will work closely with senior riggers, engineers, and other technical teams to ensure turbines and related components are installed, aligned, and commissioned efficiently and safely. The role involves leading a team of junior riggers, ensuring quality and safety standards are met while optimizing system performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Turbine Installation and Rigging:

    • Lead and execute the rigging and installation of turbines, generators, motors, and other mechanical systems in alignment with project specifications and safety standards.
    • Supervise the positioning and securing of turbine components, ensuring proper alignment and installation procedures are followed.
    • Coordinate the setup and operation of lifting equipment such as cranes, hoists, and rigging systems, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
  2. Team Leadership and Coordination:

    • Supervise and mentor junior riggers, providing guidance and ensuring they follow safety procedures and rigging techniques.
    • Coordinate the rigging team during turbine installations, delegating tasks based on project requirements and individual skills.
    • Ensure clear communication within the rigging team and with other departments to ensure smooth project execution.
  3. System Alignment and Performance:

    • Ensure turbines are properly aligned, using tools such as laser alignment equipment, and verify that the installation meets required performance standards.
    • Lead the troubleshooting efforts for any mechanical issues related to turbine installation, including addressing challenges related to component alignment, rigging, or system integration.
    • Verify the functionality of turbine components through testing and inspections before final handover.
  4. Safety and Compliance:

    • Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols, risk assessments, and regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, NEC, IEC) during all turbine rigging and installation activities.
    • Conduct regular safety briefings for the rigging team, emphasizing the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
    • Identify and mitigate any potential safety hazards or risks, taking proactive measures to prevent accidents during rigging and installation operations.
  5. Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

    • Assist in the maintenance and repair of turbine systems, including disassembling, inspecting, and reassembling turbine components as necessary.
    • Troubleshoot mechanical and rigging issues during the installation, maintenance, and operation of turbines, ensuring systems operate efficiently and effectively.
    • Support the replacement and calibration of turbine components, including motors, seals, and bearings, ensuring minimal downtime during repairs.
  6. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate and detailed records of turbine rigging activities, including lifting plans, rigging checklists, and safety inspections.
    • Prepare progress reports, documenting installation milestones, challenges, and solutions, and communicate this information to senior management and clients.
    • Ensure all rigging work and modifications are properly documented and accessible for audits or future reference.
  7. Collaboration with Engineers and Project Managers:

    • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and other technical teams to discuss project requirements, timelines, and design specifications.
    • Provide technical support and expertise to the project management team during the turbine rigging and installation phases.
    • Participate in project meetings, contributing insights on turbine installation, rigging challenges, and project progress.
  8. Training and Development:

    • Mentor junior riggers, providing technical training and guidance on turbine rigging procedures, safety practices, and equipment handling.
    • Assist in the development of training materials for new rigging team members, promoting skill development and adherence to best practices.
  9. Continuous Improvement:

    • Identify areas for process improvement within turbine rigging operations and propose solutions to increase efficiency, reduce downtime, and improve safety.
    • Stay updated with the latest rigging technologies, turbine designs, and safety standards to continuously improve rigging practices and systems.
    • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the overall effectiveness of turbine rigging and installation operations.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Strong understanding of turbine systems, rigging procedures, and mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in using rigging equipment, such as cranes, hoists, slings, shackles, and lifting beams.
  • Expertise in turbine alignment techniques and use of alignment tools (e.g., laser alignment).
  • Knowledge of safety standards and protocols (e.g., OSHA, NEC, IEC) related to turbine rigging and installation.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills, particularly in identifying and resolving mechanical issues related to turbine systems.
  • Ability to lead and supervise a team of riggers, ensuring high standards of work and safety are maintained.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate effectively with project teams, engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, lifting plans, and turbine system schematics.

Key Focus Areas:

Field Instrumentation: Assist in maintaining and calibrating field devices for accurate process control.

Troubleshooting: Learn basic fault diagnosis and support the resolution of issues in instrumentation systems.

Safety Compliance: Follow safety protocols and participate in training programs to ensure workplace safety.

Skill Development: Gain technical knowledge and experience in oil and gas field operations.

Educational Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certifications in rigging or mechanical systems preferred.
  • Formal training in turbine rigging, mechanical systems, or industrial safety is a plus.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience in turbine rigging, mechanical installation, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in managing turbine rigging projects and working with large-scale turbine systems.
  • Prior experience in supervising and mentoring junior riggers or technicians is advantageous.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency in rigging tools and equipment (e.g., cranes, hoists, rigging slings, shackles).
  • Experience with alignment equipment and tools, including laser alignment systems.
  • Familiarity with project management software or reporting tools to track progress and report on turbine rigging activities.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong problem-solving abilities and ability to troubleshoot mechanical and rigging issues.
  • Ability to work effectively in physically demanding environments, including lifting heavy components and working at heights.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and work in various field conditions as required.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks while ensuring high safety and quality standards.
