Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Turbine Engineer is a subject matter expert responsible for leading the operation, maintenance, reliability, and performance optimization of steam, gas, and hydro turbines. This role drives strategic engineering decisions, leads major overhauls, oversees root cause analyses, and mentors junior team members. The position requires strong leadership, technical acumen, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure high availability, efficiency, and safety of critical rotating equipment in power generation facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Maintenance Oversight

    • Lead planning, execution, and supervision of major turbine overhauls and lifecycle maintenance.

    • Define maintenance strategies (RBI, CBM, TPM) to improve reliability and reduce unplanned downtime.

  2. Turbine Performance & Optimization

    • Analyze turbine operational data to identify efficiency losses, thermal imbalances, or degradation trends.

    • Implement corrective actions and performance upgrades (e.g., blade path optimization, seal system improvement).

  3. Engineering & Design Review

    • Review and approve engineering modifications, part replacements, and retrofit solutions.

    • Validate OEM recommendations and ensure alignment with plant operational goals.

  4. Root Cause Analysis & Troubleshooting

    • Lead root cause investigations of mechanical failures, vibration anomalies, and operational disruptions.

    • Collaborate with OEMs, reliability engineers, and site teams to resolve chronic issues.

  5. Project Leadership

    • Manage technical aspects of turbine installation, major overhauls, and plant upgrade projects.

    • Develop project scopes, technical specifications, and vendor evaluations.

  6. Mentoring & Team Development

    • Provide technical mentorship to junior and mid-level turbine engineers and technicians.

    • Conduct training sessions on turbine diagnostics, safety practices, and engineering best practices.

  7. Compliance & Documentation

    • Ensure adherence to industry standards (ASME, API, IEC) and environmental/safety regulations.

    • Maintain and review documentation including inspection reports, maintenance logs, and engineering records.

Key Focus Areas:

  • ⚙️ Asset Reliability: Drive long-term reliability and integrity of steam, gas, and hydro turbines through strategic maintenance and asset lifecycle management.

  • 📊 Performance Optimization: Deliver measurable improvements in turbine output, efficiency, and availability.

  • 🛠 Outage Excellence: Plan and execute turbine outages with a focus on safety, quality, cost control, and schedule adherence.

  • 🔍 Technical Leadership: Serve as the go-to expert for turbine systems, failure diagnostics, and advanced troubleshooting.

  • 👥 Team Capability Building: Elevate team performance through mentoring, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent

  • Experience: 8–15 years of experience in turbine engineering (steam/gas/hydro) within power generation or heavy industry

  • Certifications: Preferred – OEM training (GE, Siemens, MHPS), Project Management (PMP), or Reliability Certifications (e.g., CMRP)

Skills & Competencies:

  • Expert knowledge of turbine thermodynamics, rotor dynamics, seal systems, and auxiliary equipment

  • Skilled in interpreting vibration data, thermal imaging, borescope findings, and clearance measurements

  • Proficient in CMMS, RCA tools, and technical software (e.g., ANSYS, SAP, PI System)

  • Strong project management and vendor coordination abilities

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and documentation skills

Working Conditions:

  • Power plant-based with required field inspections and occasional travel to OEM or vendor sites

  • Involvement in emergency callouts, plant shutdowns, and extended work hours during critical outages

  • Mandatory use of PPE and strict adherence to HSE policies
