Job Tittle: Turbine Control Engineer

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Turbine Control Engineer is responsible for independently managing the operation, maintenance, and optimization of turbine control systems in power generation facilities. This role involves leading commissioning activities, troubleshooting complex issues, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. The engineer contributes to improving system efficiency and reliability while mentoring junior team members and collaborating with cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities:

System Operation and Maintenance:

  • Manage the operation, calibration, and maintenance of turbine control systems, including integration with generators and boilers.
  • Perform advanced diagnostics and optimization of SCADA, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and turbine controls.
  • Lead the implementation of upgrades and retrofits to turbine control systems for improved performance.

Testing, Troubleshooting, and Optimization:

  • Conduct detailed troubleshooting and root cause analysis to resolve complex issues in turbine control systems.
  • Develop and execute test protocols to validate system performance and ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Optimize control logic and parameters to enhance efficiency, reliability, and safety.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure all turbine control activities comply with industry standards (e.g., IEC, ISA) and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies for high-priority systems.
  • Oversee the validation and maintenance of safety and emergency shutdown systems.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Prepare comprehensive reports on system performance, diagnostics, and maintenance activities for internal and stakeholder review.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of system configurations, test results, and calibration settings.
  • Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and best practices for turbine control operations.

Collaboration and Leadership:

  • Work closely with operations, maintenance, and safety teams to align turbine control activities with organizational objectives.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure successful project execution.

Project Management:

  • Lead mid-sized projects related to turbine control systems, including commissioning and system upgrades.
  • Develop project schedules, budgets, and resource allocation plans, ensuring timely delivery.
  • Identify and mitigate risks during project execution to achieve desired outcomes.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Power Generation Control Systems: Manage the operation and maintenance of turbines, generators, and boiler control systems.
  • SCADA and Distributed Control Systems (DCS): Lead testing, calibration, and optimization of SCADA/DCS platforms.
  • Thermal and Nuclear Plant Control Systems: Oversee commissioning and optimization of control systems specific to thermal and nuclear plants.
  • Safety and Emergency Shutdown Systems: Ensure the reliability and compliance of safety-critical systems.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Advanced knowledge of turbine control systems, including SCADA, DCS, and PLC programming.
  • Proficiency in industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, and HART.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to address complex system issues.
  • In-depth understanding of safety regulations, risk management, and emergency procedures.
  • Familiarity with advanced control system integration and optimization techniques.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in SCADA, DCS, or turbine control systems (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Honeywell) are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in turbine control systems, including commissioning, testing, and optimization.
  • Proven ability to manage maintenance and troubleshooting activities independently.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency with advanced diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, loop calibrators, and vibration analyzers.
  • Experience with software platforms like Siemens TIA Portal, Honeywell Experion, ABB DCS, or Yokogawa CENTUM.
  • Familiarity with data visualization and analytics tools for performance monitoring.
