Thermal Spray/Coating Technician – Protective Coatings on Turbine Parts

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Thermal Spray/Coating Technician to lead the application of protective coatings on turbine components using advanced thermal spray technologies such as Plasma Spray, HVOF, and Arc Wire Spray. The ideal candidate will ensure coating quality, process efficiency, and compliance with engineering specifications while also mentoring junior technicians and driving continuous improvement in coating operations.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead and perform thermal spray coating processes (Plasma, HVOF, Arc Wire) for applying high-performance coatings to turbine parts (e.g., blades, vanes, nozzles, and disks).

    • Interpret and follow detailed work instructions, engineering drawings, and coating specifications (including thickness, porosity, and bond strength).

    • Prepare components through surface cleaning, grit blasting, masking, and fixturing for optimized coating application.

    • Monitor and adjust key process parameters such as spray distance, feed rate, temperature, and gas flow to maintain coating consistency and quality.

    • Perform in-process and final inspections of coated parts (visual, dimensional, and thickness checks) and collaborate with QA for release.

    • Train and mentor junior and mid-level technicians in coating best practices, process setup, and safety compliance.

    • Maintain spray booth systems, thermal spray guns, feeders, and related equipment in optimal condition.

    • Troubleshoot coating defects (e.g., peeling, overspray, uneven thickness) and initiate corrective actions with engineering support.

    • Ensure compliance with internal and external standards, such as OEM specifications, AS9100, and safety protocols.

    • Document all coating operations, including traceability of materials, job travelers, and quality records.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. High-Precision Coating Application

    • Expert in applying thermal spray coatings with tight control over thickness, uniformity, and adhesion on complex turbine geometries.

  2. Process Optimization & Troubleshooting

    • Continuously improve coating quality, reduce rework, and resolve process-related issues efficiently.

  3. Mentorship & Technical Leadership

    • Train and guide junior technicians while enforcing best practices in surface engineering and coating application.

  4. Equipment Maintenance & Calibration

    • Lead preventive maintenance and proper setup of thermal spray systems and ensure equipment reliability.

  5. Standards & Quality Compliance

    • Ensure coatings meet aerospace or industrial turbine standards (e.g., GE, Siemens, Rolls-Royce, AS9100).

Qualifications & Skills:

    • Technical diploma or associate degree in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering, Surface Technology, or related field.

    • 6–10+ years of hands-on experience in thermal spray coating operations (Plasma, HVOF, Arc Wire), preferably on turbine or aerospace components.

    • Deep understanding of coating materials (e.g., TBCs, ceramics, carbides, bond coats) and surface preparation techniques.

    • Skilled in interpreting technical drawings, specifications, and coating thickness requirements.

    • Proficient in using coating thickness gauges, profilometers, and basic dimensional inspection tools.

    • Familiarity with coating-related standards (e.g., AWS C2.18, ISO 14922, AMS 2447).

    • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and safety mindset.

    • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to shifting production schedules.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Prior experience in aerospace or industrial gas turbine coating environments.

    • Experience with robotic or automated spray systems.

    • Exposure to lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives.

    • Certification in thermal spray coating or surface engineering (e.g., ASM, AWS).
