Thermal Spray/Coating Technician – Protective Coatings on Turbine Parts

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a competent and reliable Mid-Level Thermal Spray/Coating Technician to carry out the application of protective coatings on turbine components using thermal spray processes such as Plasma Spray, HVOF, and Arc Wire. This role is ideal for technicians with several years of hands-on coating experience who can operate independently, ensure coating quality, and support production efficiency while collaborating closely with senior staff.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Independently perform thermal spray operations on turbine components following approved work instructions and specifications.

    • Set up and operate thermal spray equipment including plasma, HVOF, and/or arc wire systems.

    • Conduct surface preparation such as grit blasting, masking, and degreasing to ensure coating adhesion.

    • Monitor and control critical process parameters (e.g., spray distance, temperature, feed rate, gas flow).

    • Perform basic in-process quality checks including coating thickness measurements and surface finish inspection.

    • Identify and report coating defects (e.g., porosity, peeling, overspray) and support resolution under supervision.

    • Follow all safety protocols, including handling high-temperature equipment and proper PPE usage.

    • Record process data, maintain accurate documentation, and ensure part traceability.

    • Support senior technicians in equipment maintenance and troubleshooting activities.

    • Maintain a clean and organized work environment following 5S principles.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Thermal Spray Coating Operations

    • Execute repeatable and quality-assured application of protective coatings on turbine parts under minimal supervision.

  2. Surface Preparation & Process Setup

    • Ensure thorough preparation of components to meet surface roughness and cleanliness criteria before spraying.

  3. In-Process Quality Assurance

    • Use gauges and instruments to monitor coating build-up and detect anomalies early in the process.

  4. Equipment Handling & Maintenance

    • Support daily maintenance, setup, and calibration of thermal spray guns, feeders, and related tools.

  5. Production & Documentation Support

    • Maintain job travelers, process sheets, and logs in alignment with quality standards (e.g., AS9100 or customer-specific requirements).

Qualifications & Skills:

    • Technical diploma or vocational certificate in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Surface Engineering.

    • 3–6 years of experience in thermal spray coating operations (e.g., plasma spray, HVOF, or arc wire), preferably on turbine or aerospace parts.

    • Solid understanding of thermal spray principles, surface preparation, and material handling.

    • Familiarity with common coating materials such as ceramics, TBCs, bond coats, and carbides.

    • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, job instructions, and process specifications.

    • Basic knowledge of quality inspection techniques and tools (coating thickness gauges, visual inspection).

    • Good mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.

    • Commitment to safety, teamwork, and continuous learning.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience working in aerospace, power generation, or heavy industrial coating environments.

    • Exposure to automated or robotic spray systems.

    • Familiarity with coating standards such as ISO 14922, AMS 2447, or customer-specific specs (e.g., GE, Pratt & Whitney).

    • Participation in continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, Kaizen, 5S).
