Job Title:  Test & Balance (TAB) Technician – NEBB/NCI Certified

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly experienced and technically proficient Senior Test & Balance Technician with NEBB or NCI certification to lead comprehensive HVAC system testing, balancing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities in a power plant environment. This leadership role involves mentoring staff, managing complex projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and driving continuous system performance improvements.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Project Management

  • Lead and manage TAB projects from planning through execution, ensuring HVAC systems meet design specifications, regulatory requirements, and operational goals.

  • Coordinate with engineers, controls technicians, contractors, and plant operations to schedule and execute testing and balancing activities.

  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior and mid-level TAB technicians.

Advanced HVAC Testing & Balancing

  • Perform advanced airflow, hydronic flow, temperature, and pressure measurements using specialized instruments and data acquisition systems.

  • Analyze complex HVAC system performance data to diagnose issues such as system imbalances, inefficiencies, leaks, or equipment degradation.

  • Develop and implement corrective balancing strategies and recommend system improvements to optimize energy efficiency and reliability.

Commissioning & System Verification

  • Lead HVAC system commissioning verification, including functional performance testing of equipment, controls, and sequences of operation.

  • Oversee troubleshooting and resolution of commissioning issues in coordination with mechanical, electrical, and controls teams.

  • Ensure thorough documentation and validation of system performance per NEBB/NCI, ASHRAE, and plant standards.

Equipment Calibration & Quality Assurance

  • Oversee calibration and maintenance programs for all TAB instruments to guarantee accuracy and reliability.

  • Develop and enforce quality assurance procedures for TAB work.

  • Review and approve TAB reports, balancing sheets, and technical documentation.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure all TAB activities comply with applicable codes, standards, and environmental, health, and safety regulations.

  • Lead safety briefings and enforce adherence to plant safety protocols and best practices.

  • Participate in audits and regulatory inspections as the technical representative for HVAC balancing.

Continuous Improvement & Training

  • Stay current with industry advancements, emerging technologies, and best practices in HVAC testing and balancing.

  • Lead training programs for TAB personnel and promote professional development initiatives.

  • Collaborate on energy efficiency and sustainability projects to enhance HVAC system performance.

Key Focus Areas

  • Lead and manage complex HVAC TAB projects in power plant environments

  • Provide expert-level diagnostics, troubleshooting, and system optimization

  • Mentor and develop TAB team members

  • Ensure rigorous compliance with NEBB/NCI standards and safety regulations

  • Drive quality assurance and continuous improvement efforts

Qualifications and Skills

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, or related field preferred

Certifications:

  • NEBB Certified Test & Balance Technician (required)

  • NCI Certified TAB Technician (preferred)

  • Additional certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or ASHRAE credentials are a plus

Experience:

  • 5+ years of advanced HVAC TAB experience in power plants, industrial, or large commercial facilities

  • Proven leadership in managing TAB projects and multidisciplinary teams

Skills:

  • Expert proficiency in HVAC airflow and hydronic system testing and balancing

  • Strong analytical skills with ability to interpret complex system data and troubleshoot issues

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and team management capabilities

  • Deep knowledge of industry codes, standards, and safety regulations

  • Skilled in preparation and review of detailed technical reports and documentation
