Roles & Responsibilities

Mid-Level - Telecommunications Specialist

Job Summary:

A Mid-Level Telecommunications Specialist is responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing telecommunications systems within an enterprise environment. This role integrates voice, video, and data communications—including VoIP, unified communications, and wireless networks—ensuring high performance, security, and reliability. The specialist collaborates closely with IT, networking, and security teams to deliver scalable and cost-effective telecom solutions that support business operations and growth.

Key Responsibilities:

System Design & Implementation:

Network Architecture: Design and deploy robust telecommunications networks that support VoIP, IP-PBX, unified communications, and video conferencing systems.

Infrastructure Development: Plan and implement fiber optic, wireless (Wi-Fi, LTE/5G), microwave, and digital transmission systems tailored to organizational needs.

Integration: Seamlessly integrate telecommunications systems with existing IT networks (LAN/WAN) to ensure unified voice and data communication.

Performance Optimization & Troubleshooting:

Monitoring: Utilize advanced diagnostic and monitoring tools to track system performance, call quality, latency, jitter, and packet loss.

Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve complex issues affecting telecom performance; perform root cause analysis and implement corrective measures.

Capacity Planning: Analyze current and projected network loads to optimize bandwidth allocation and system scalability.

Security & Compliance:

Security Implementation: Deploy secure VoIP protocols and encryption mechanisms to protect voice and data transmissions.

Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all telecom systems meet industry and regulatory standards (e.g., GDPR, local telecom regulations) through periodic audits and updates.

Risk Management: Collaborate with cybersecurity teams to perform vulnerability assessments and remediate security gaps in telecommunication systems.

Project Management & Documentation:

Project Leadership: Lead telecom projects such as system upgrades, new installations, and service expansions; manage timelines, resources, and budgets.

Documentation: Create and maintain detailed network diagrams, configuration files, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and performance reports.

Vendor Coordination: Work with vendors and service providers to evaluate, procure, and implement telecommunications solutions; manage service contracts and SLAs.

Collaboration & Training:

Cross-Functional Coordination: Collaborate with IT, networking, and security teams to ensure telecommunications systems align with overall network architecture and business objectives.

Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and training to junior team members; lead knowledge-sharing sessions on emerging technologies and best practices.

Continuous Improvement: Participate in industry forums, training programs, and certification courses to stay updated on the latest telecom innovations.

Automation & Reporting:

Scripting & Automation: Leverage basic scripting (e.g., Python, PowerShell) and automation tools to streamline repetitive tasks such as monitoring, reporting, and system backups.

Performance Reporting: Generate regular reports on system uptime, performance metrics, incident resolution, and capacity planning for review by management.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

Technical Expertise:

• In-depth knowledge of VoIP, IP-PBX, unified communications, and traditional telephony systems.

• Proficient in designing and managing fiber optic networks, wireless communications, and digital transmission systems.

• Familiarity with telecommunication protocols (SIP, H.323, RTP) and related signaling technologies.

Networking & Integration:

• Strong understanding of IT networking (LAN/WAN), IP addressing, and VLAN configuration.

• Experience in integrating telecom solutions with existing IT and data networks.

Troubleshooting & Analytical Skills:

• Advanced diagnostic skills using tools such as spectrum analyzers, VoIP analyzers, and network performance monitors.

• Excellent analytical abilities for capacity planning, performance optimization, and problem resolution.

Security & Compliance:

• Knowledge of telecom security best practices, including encryption and secure signaling.

• Understanding of regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements in the telecommunications industry.

Project Management & Communication:

• Proven ability to manage projects, including planning, execution, and vendor coordination.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and documentation.

Automation & Scripting (Bonus):

• Basic scripting skills (e.g., Python, PowerShell) for automating routine monitoring and reporting tasks.

Educational Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Telecommunications, Electronics, Information Technology, or a related field.

• Relevant certifications such as Cisco CCNP Collaboration, Avaya Certified Implementation Specialist, or CompTIA Network+ are preferred.

Experience:

• 3-7 years of experience in telecommunications engineering or related network support roles.

• Demonstrated experience in designing, deploying, and managing telecom systems in a mid-to-large scale enterprise environment.

Tools and Equipment:

• Diagnostic & Monitoring Tools: Fiber optic testers, spectrum analyzers, VoIP analyzers, and network performance monitoring software (e.g., SolarWinds, Nagios, PRTG).

• Telecom Management Platforms: Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Avaya Aura, or similar unified communications systems.

• Documentation & Simulation: Microsoft Visio, Confluence, and network simulation tools (e.g., GNS3, Packet Tracer).

Other Requirements:

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.

• Strong problem-solving skills with a detail-oriented approach.

• Flexibility to work off-hours when necessary for system maintenance, upgrades, or emergency troubleshooting.

• Commitment to continuous professional development and staying current with emerging telecommunications technologies.
