Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Job Title: Structural Engineer

Job Summary:

The Junior Structural Engineer will support the design, analysis, and inspection of structural systems and components for various projects in construction, infrastructure, and engineering. This role is ideal for candidates with a background in civil or structural engineering, looking to develop practical skills and gain hands-on experience in structural design and analysis. The Junior Structural Engineer will work under the guidance of senior engineers and assist with the preparation of technical drawings, calculations, and reports, ensuring that structures meet safety, performance, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in Structural Design:

    • Collaborate with senior engineers to assist in the design of structural systems for buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects.
    • Help develop technical drawings, 3D models, and schematics using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks).
    • Assist in the selection and sizing of materials (steel, concrete, timber) and structural components (columns, beams, foundations) for different structures.
  2. Structural Analysis and Calculations:

    • Support in performing structural analysis using engineering software (e.g., STAAD, SAP2000) and manual calculations to ensure designs meet safety, stability, and performance standards.
    • Help analyze load distributions, stress points, and material strengths to optimize the structural integrity of designs.
    • Assist with evaluating the impact of environmental factors, such as wind, earthquakes, and seismic activity, on the structure's design.
  3. Project Documentation:

    • Assist in preparing technical documentation, including design specifications, calculation sheets, reports, and construction drawings.
    • Maintain accurate records of design changes, project updates, and technical discussions for internal and client reference.
    • Prepare and organize materials lists and cost estimates based on design specifications and engineering calculations.
  4. Site Visits and Inspections:

    • Support senior engineers in conducting site visits and inspections to ensure that the construction of structural systems aligns with the approved design and specifications.
    • Assist in identifying potential issues or deviations from design during the construction process and help propose corrective measures.
    • Participate in monitoring construction progress, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and quality control standards.
  5. Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:

    • Work closely with other engineering disciplines (e.g., mechanical, electrical) to ensure that structural designs are properly integrated into overall project plans.
    • Communicate effectively with project managers, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure that designs are executed as planned.
    • Attend project meetings and contribute to discussions on design solutions, progress, and technical challenges.
  6. Health, Safety, and Compliance:

    • Learn and ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and regulatory codes (e.g., IBC, AISC, BS, local building codes).
    • Help conduct risk assessments to identify potential hazards and assist in implementing strategies to mitigate those risks in design and construction processes.
    • Ensure that all design and construction work meets the required safety and environmental standards.
  7. Learning and Development:

    • Participate in training and development programs to enhance technical knowledge in structural design, analysis, and engineering software.
    • Stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in structural engineering, including advances in materials, software, and construction techniques.
    • Seek opportunities to improve problem-solving and design optimization skills.
  8. Reporting and Presentations:

    • Prepare reports on design progress, findings, and performance results for both internal and client review.
    • Assist in preparing presentations for project stakeholders, including summarizing technical data and presenting design concepts and solutions.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Basic understanding of structural engineering principles, including load calculations, material strengths, and construction methods.
  • Familiarity with engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, STAAD, SAP2000) for structural design and analysis.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to perform calculations and interpret technical data.
  • Knowledge of construction materials (e.g., concrete, steel, timber) and their applications in structural systems.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work under the supervision of senior engineers to complete design tasks accurately and efficiently.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and report on progress effectively.

Key Focus Areas:

Field Instrumentation: Assist in maintaining and calibrating field devices for accurate process control.

Troubleshooting: Learn basic fault diagnosis and support the resolution of issues in instrumentation systems.

Safety Compliance: Follow safety protocols and participate in training programs to ensure workplace safety.

Skill Development: Gain technical knowledge and experience in oil and gas field operations.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
  • Relevant coursework or academic projects in structural analysis, materials science, and construction design is a plus.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience in structural engineering, ideally in the design or construction field (internships or hands-on projects in structural design are beneficial).
  • Exposure to engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, STAAD, SAP2000) during academic studies is beneficial.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Familiarity with CAD tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks for structural design.
  • Basic understanding of structural analysis software like STAAD or SAP2000 for load analysis and system optimization.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting, data analysis, and presentation creation.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong willingness to learn and develop technical expertise in structural engineering.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and contribute to the success of a project.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks or projects simultaneously.
