Steel Fabrication Worker

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Role Purpose

Fabricate, fit, weld, and finish mild steel/stainless components (stairs, handrails/balustrades, canopies, gates, lintels, embeds, ladders, small structural frames, MEP supports) to approved drawings and specifications, delivering dimensionally accurate, safe, and corrosion-protected work—on programme and compliant with Sharjah Municipality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

    Drawing Reading & Preparation

  • Read shop/IFC drawings and weld symbols; confirm materials, thicknesses, and tolerances; raise RFIs for conflicts.

  • Mark-out, square, clamp, and fit-up components using jigs/fixtures; verify diagonals and camber/straightness.

    Cutting, Forming & Assembly

  • Execute cutting (shear, bandsaw, plasma/oxy-fuel), drilling/punching, bevelling, rolling/bending as required.

  • Assemble members with tack welds, maintain root gaps; control distortion and heat input.

    Welding & Finishing

  • Perform SMAW/MMA, GMAW/MIG, GTAW/TIG per approved WPS; select electrodes/wire/gas; clean welds between passes.

  • Achieve visual acceptance (profile, undercut, porosity) and support NDT (PT/MT/UT) when specified.

  • Grind/linish, radius edges, and prepare surfaces for galvanizing/powder coat/paint; apply touch-up systems on-site as required.

   Corrosion Protection & Assembly QA

  • Ensure proper surface prep (SSPC/ISO), DFT checks for paints, correct vent/drain holes for galvanizing, and stainless–carbon isolation (gaskets/paint).

  • Stamp/label parts for traceability; pre-assemble handrails/frames for trial fit; protect finished edges during transport.

    Site Support (as needed)

  • Assist with erection/installation: drilling/fixing anchors, aligning/levelling, torqueing bolts, welding on site where permitted, sealant/flashings at interfaces.

  • Coordinate with other trades (openings, embeds, waterproofing continuity).

   Documentation & Housekeeping

  • Complete daily production logs, material heat numbers, weld maps, and inspection checklists.

  • Keep workshop and site areas orderly; segregate scrap; maintain tools/equipment in good condition.

    HSE

  • Follow hot-work permits, fire watch, cylinder storage rules; maintain extinguishers and screens.

  • Use PPE (helmet, face shield, respirator when grinding/cutting), hearing/hand protection.

  • Safe lifting/rigging with certified slings; lock-out/tag-out for machines; manage fume extraction and ventilation.

  • Working-at-height precautions during site installs; prevent dropped objects.

Weather & Traffic Considerations (Sharjah/UAE)

  • Heat & Humidity:

    • Work heavy welding/installation early morning/evening; comply with MOHRE summer midday break.

    • Handle hot metal safely; hydrate and rest in shade; expect extended paint/adhesive cure times and possible flash rust—blast/prime promptly.

  • Dust/Sand:

    • Keep cut/weld surfaces clean; cover components to avoid contamination before coating; protect bearings/sliding gear from grit.

  • Occasional Rain/Coastal Influence:

    • Store steel off the ground under cover; verify pit/anchor areas are dry before install; use corrosion-resistant fasteners where specified.

  • Traffic & Logistics:

    • Plan off-peak or night deliveries for long members; provide banksmen and lift plans; secure SRTA/Police permits if curbside unloading or cranes affect public roads.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 5–8 years steel fabrication/welding (UAE/GCC preferred) on building projects.

  • Competent with SMAW/MIG/TIG, fit-up, jigs, and finishing; familiar with AWS D1.1/BS EN practices (as project specifies).

  • Able to read drawings/weld symbols; basic English for coordination (Arabic/Urdu/Hindi an advantage).

  • Valid welder qualification tests (WQT) for relevant processes/thicknesses preferred.

Tools & Equipment (Typical)

Welding sets (SMAW/MIG/TIG), gas cutting/plasma, grinders & flap wheels, drill press/mag drill, presses/rollers, clamps/jigs, measuring tools (tape, square, vernier), lifting tackles, DFT gauges, PPE, fume extraction.

Core Competencies

  • Dimensional accuracy & clean workmanship

  • Sound weld quality and distortion control

  • Corrosion-protection awareness (prep, DFT, isolation)

  • Safe lifting/rigging and hot-work discipline

  • Coordination with civil/MEP interfaces & protection of adjacent finishes

KPIs

  • First-time pass on QA inspections/NDT; rework ≤ target.

  • Tolerances achieved (plumb/level/diagonals) on first fit.

  • Zero hot-work incidents; full PPE compliance and tidy work zones.

  • On-programme fabrication and installation; no coating failures at handover.

  • Delivery and lifting executed with zero traffic violations and damage.
