Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Shutdown/Turnaround Supervisor โ€“ HVAC is responsible for end-to-end supervision, planning assistance, and execution leadership of HVAC systems maintenance during scheduled plant shutdowns or turnaround events. This includes coordinating multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring HSE compliance, resolving technical challenges, and managing time-sensitive HVAC interventions across chillers, AHUs, ducts, piping, controls, and cooling systems in complex facilities.

This role is critical for minimizing downtime while ensuring HVAC equipment performance and compliance are restored to optimum levels post-maintenance.


Key Responsibilities:

๐Ÿ”ง Shutdown Planning & Pre-Execution:

  • Participate in development and review of shutdown execution plans, job packs, and HVAC scope definitions.

  • Conduct HVAC system walkdowns to identify work zones, access requirements, safety hazards, and isolation points.

  • Validate material take-offs (MTOs), tool lists, and manpower resources specific to HVAC equipment.

  • Collaborate with planning and engineering teams for method statement reviews, risk assessments, and permit planning.

  • Coordinate with OEMs, subcontractors, and support services for manpower mobilization and vendor supervision.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Execution & Field Supervision:

  • Lead and supervise mechanical execution across HVAC systems, including:

    • Dismantling and servicing AHUs, FCUs, VRFs, chillers, exhaust fans, heat exchangers.

    • Cleaning and disinfecting ducting, air filters, coils, and trays.

    • Overhauling compressors, replacing bearings, inspecting belts, actuators, sensors.

    • Conducting refrigerant evacuation, leak testing, recharging, and pressure testing.

  • Monitor adherence to LOTO (Lockout/Tagout), Permit to Work, Hot Work, Confined Space, and other plant-specific safety protocols.

  • Resolve technical deviations, material mismatches, or scheduling delays in coordination with engineers.

  • Ensure accurate reporting of progress, manpower productivity, and shift handovers.

๐Ÿงช Post-Shutdown Activities:

  • Oversee reassembly, functional testing, and recommissioning of HVAC systems.

  • Review and close out punch lists, ensure documentation of test results, and submit final job closure reports.

  • Support lessons-learned workshops and continuous improvement initiatives for future turnarounds.


Key Focus Areas:

  • โœ… Execution Management: Lead HVAC scope under compressed timelines without compromising quality or safety.

  • โœ… Safety Leadership: Enforce plant safety standards, conduct daily toolbox talks, and lead incident prevention.

  • โœ… Coordination: Interface with electrical, controls (BMS), scaffolding, and access teams for integrated workflows.

  • โœ… Vendor Oversight: Manage and evaluate third-party HVAC contractors or OEM service partners.

  • โœ… Risk Mitigation: Identify and escalate potential delays, safety breaches, or equipment abnormalities early.


Skills & Qualifications:

  • Diploma or B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical, HVAC, or Building Services Engineering.

  • 10+ years of hands-on HVAC experience, with 5+ years in senior supervisory roles in shutdowns.

  • In-depth technical knowledge of HVAC systems in industrial and commercial plants.

  • Strong familiarity with safety standards (e.g., OSHA, ISO, plant-specific protocols).

  • Ability to interpret HVAC schematics, control diagrams, P&IDs, and commissioning checklists.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and emergency response capabilities.

  • Proficiency in using maintenance tracking tools, MS Office, and CMMS/BMS systems.


Preferred Facility Background:

  • Oil & Gas: Refineries, offshore/onshore plants, compressor stations.

  • Power & Utilities: GT/ST power plants, district cooling, data centers.

  • Pharma / Cleanroom: Critical HVAC systems for controlled environments.

  • Airports, FMCG, Hospitals: High-reliability HVAC facilities with strict turnaround windows.


Tools & Technical Interfaces:

  • Tools: Coil cleaners, refrigerant recovery kits, air balancing tools, duct inspection cameras.

  • Software: CMMS (SAP, Maximo), MS Excel, AutoCAD (for redlining), turnaround planning tools (Primavera/MS Project).

  • Documentation: Method Statements, JSA, PSSR checklists, test reports, and closure documentation.
