The Junior Sheet Metal Technician assists in the fabrication and installation of HVAC ductwork systems aboard vessels under the guidance of experienced technicians. The role focuses on learning trade fundamentals, supporting fabrication and fit-up tasks, and ensuring basic alignment and joint preparation of ductwork in marine environments.
Support in Fabrication and Installation of Marine HVAC Ducting Systems
Assist in preparing, assembling, and fitting HVAC ducts and ventilation components in machinery spaces and accommodation areas, ensuring compliance with layout drawings and basic marine standards.
Assist in measuring, cutting, and assembling sheet metal duct components from galvanized steel, aluminum, or stainless steel.
Support installation of ducts, dampers, air grilles, and diffusers onboard vessels per layout and routing instructions.
Use hand tools (snips, hammers, seamers) and basic power tools (drills, rivet guns) for duct assembly and mounting.
Learn to read and interpret basic HVAC installation drawings and ductwork layouts.
Help with aligning ducts, applying gaskets/sealants, and fastening flanged or slip joint connections.
Maintain tools, work areas, and material stock in an organized, safe, and shipyard-compliant manner.
Follow instructions from senior technicians regarding field adjustments and space constraints.
Observe and follow all safety rules, including confined space protocols and hot work area precautions.
Report issues, material needs, or obstructions to supervisors promptly.
Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and on-the-job training sessions.
High school diploma or vocational training in HVAC, Sheet Metal, or Marine Fabrication (preferred but not required).
0–2 years of experience in sheet metal or HVAC installation (entry-level or apprenticeship accepted).
Basic understanding of mechanical systems and fabrication principles.
Ability to use tape measures, hand tools, and marking instruments accurately.
Physically fit to work in shipboard conditions: confined spaces, ladders, elevated platforms, and variable temperatures.
Eagerness to learn marine HVAC systems and ducting standards.
Positive attitude and willingness to take direction in a team environment.
Familiarity with shipyard or industrial work environments a plus.
Interest in progressing toward mid-level technician or HVAC specialization roles.
