The Mid-Level Sheet Metal Technician – HVAC Duct Fabrication and Assembly is responsible for independently fabricating, assembling, and fitting sheet metal components for HVAC ductwork systems. The technician interprets layout drawings, ensures fabrication accuracy, and supports installation efforts aboard vessels or offshore units. The role includes supervising junior team members and maintaining compliance with HVAC standards and safety regulations.
Fabricate and assemble rectangular, round, and custom ductwork from galvanized steel, aluminum, and stainless steel using manual and powered equipment (brakes, shears, rollers, notchers).
Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and SMACNA/DW/144 fabrication standards to ensure dimensional accuracy.
Cut, bend, punch, and form sheet metal parts based on project drawings and layout requirements.
Perform spot welding, riveting, clinching, flanging, gasketing, and sealing as per duct design and installation needs.
Install HVAC ducts and fittings on vessels or offshore structures, ensuring correct orientation, support, sealing, and alignment.
Coordinate with insulation and piping teams during the HVAC installation process.
Lead or guide junior technicians in safe work practices and efficient fabrication techniques.
Conduct quality checks on fabricated components, ensuring leak-tightness, accurate dimensions, and finish quality.
Maintain clean and organized workstations and adhere to safety, fire, and PPE protocols at all times.
Communicate effectively with supervisors and engineers regarding fabrication challenges, material shortages, or design issues.
Independent Fabrication
– Perform duct fabrication and assembly with minimal supervision while maintaining precision.
Drawing and Standard Compliance
– Ensure all work aligns with technical documentation and fabrication standards.
Installation Support
– Prepare and install HVAC duct systems onboard in coordination with other trades.
Quality and Mentorship
– Conduct quality checks and mentor less experienced team members.
Technical diploma, ITI certification, or trade qualification in Sheet Metal Work, HVAC Fabrication, or Mechanical Construction.
3–5 years of relevant experience in HVAC ductwork fabrication and installation, preferably in marine or offshore sectors.
Proficient in using manual sheet metal tools and machinery, including powered brakes, punches, seamers, and spot welders.
Skilled in interpreting HVAC layout drawings, isometrics, and assembly schematics.
Familiar with duct standards such as SMACNA, DW/144, or equivalent.
Understanding of duct system components: volume dampers, access doors, flexible connectors, turning vanes, and support brackets.
Good knowledge of safe material handling, hot work procedures, and confined space entry.
Ability to supervise junior helpers or apprentices in workshop or site settings.
Experience in marine HVAC installations aboard ships, offshore platforms, or naval vessels.
Knowledge of duct insulation and lagging techniques.
Familiarity with digital layout tools or CNC duct fabrication processes is a plus.
Forklift, rigging, or scaffolding certification preferred.
