Sheet Metal Technician – HVAC Duct Fabrication and Assembly

Roles & Responsibilities

The Junior Sheet Metal Technician – HVAC Duct Fabrication and Assembly is responsible for assisting in the cutting, shaping, assembling, and installation of sheet metal components used in HVAC ductwork and ventilation systems. Working under supervision, the technician supports the fabrication of components for shipboard or offshore HVAC applications, ensuring work is carried out to technical drawings, safety standards, and project requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Assist in the fabrication and assembly of rectangular and round ducts, fittings, and HVAC enclosures from sheet metal materials (galvanized steel, aluminum, stainless steel).

    • Operate basic workshop equipment such as shears, brakes, rollers, drills, and hand tools under supervision.

    • Learn to read and interpret HVAC duct layout drawings, fabrication sketches, and job orders.

    • Support the preparation and layout of materials for cutting and forming based on dimensions and tolerances.

    • Participate in spot welding, riveting, fastening, and sealant application during duct assembly.

    • Help with transport, alignment, and fitting of ducts during onboard installation phases.

    • Ensure all parts are fabricated and assembled in accordance with QA/QC guidelines and HVAC standards.

    • Keep the work area organized and comply with workshop safety procedures and PPE requirements.

    • Assist in cleaning and finishing ducts, applying insulation, or fitting flanges and gaskets as needed.

    • Report defective tools or material shortages to the supervisor.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Fabrication Support
    – Provide hands-on help in sheet metal cutting, shaping, and duct assembly processes.

  2. Drawing Interpretation
    – Begin learning how to read fabrication drawings and HVAC duct layout plans.

  3. Safety and Quality Compliance
    – Follow basic safety protocols and contribute to clean, accurate workmanship.

  4. Installation Readiness
    – Assist in preparing ducts and components for delivery and on-site fitting.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • High school diploma or trade school certification in Sheet Metal Work, HVAC, Mechanical Fabrication, or similar field.

    • 0–2 years of experience in sheet metal work or mechanical fabrication (internships/apprenticeships welcome).

    • Familiarity with basic hand and power tools used in sheet metal work.

    • Understanding of measurement tools, units, and basic layout techniques.

    • Physically fit and able to lift materials, work in confined spaces, and stand for extended periods.

    • Basic knowledge of safety practices in a workshop or shipyard environment.

    • Team player with a willingness to learn and take direction.

Preferred:

    • Exposure to HVAC duct fabrication in a marine or industrial setting.

    • Basic understanding of duct standards (SMACNA, DW/144) or HVAC layout conventions.

    • Forklift or overhead crane familiarity is a plus.

    • Experience with metal insulation wrapping, flange alignment, or gasket placement.
