Job Title: Sheet Metal Designer
Overview of the Role
The Sheet Metal Designer plays a crucial role in the design and development of sheet metal components and assemblies. This mid-level position requires a blend of creativity and technical expertise to produce designs that meet both aesthetic and functional requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and industry standards, as well as proficiency in CAD software. The designer will collaborate with engineers and production teams to ensure that designs are feasible and cost-effective, while also adhering to project timelines and specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop sheet metal components and assemblies for various projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and specifications.
- Create detailed engineering drawings, models, and specifications using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar) specifically tailored for sheet metal fabrication.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and production teams to assess design feasibility, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness of sheet metal components.
- Analyze and select appropriate materials and processes for sheet metal fabrication, including cutting, bending, forming, and welding techniques.
- Conduct design reviews and provide technical guidance to junior designers and engineers, ensuring adherence to best practices in sheet metal design.
- Perform stress analysis and other necessary calculations to ensure the structural integrity and performance of sheet metal designs.
- Prepare and maintain design documentation, including specifications, change orders, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Stay current with industry trends, materials, and fabrication technologies, integrating innovative solutions into the design process.
- Support the implementation of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and reduce waste in sheet metal fabrication.
- Collaborate with quality assurance teams to ensure that sheet metal components meet required standards and specifications.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field; an associate degree with relevant experience may also be considered.
- Minimum of 3–7 years of experience in sheet metal design, preferably in manufacturing or construction industries.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor) with a focus on sheet metal design features.
- Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication processes, materials, and industry standards (e.g., AWS, ISO).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for effectively conveying design concepts and collaborating with teams.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with industry regulations and quality assurance processes is a plus.
