Sensor Wiring Technician – Temperature, Proximity, Hall Effect

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Supervisor – Sensor Wiring Technician oversees the installation and termination of field sensors including temperature, proximity, and Hall Effect sensors. This role ensures the quality, accuracy, and compliance of all sensor wiring activities in alignment with project specifications, safety standards, and commissioning deadlines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Supervision & Planning:
Lead and allocate tasks to a team of sensor wiring technicians, ensuring adherence to installation schedules and work packages.

  • Installation Oversight:
Supervise the correct mounting, orientation, and wiring of sensors (RTDs, thermocouples, proximity, inductive, capacitive, and Hall Effect sensors) according to datasheets and loop diagrams.

  • Technical Quality Assurance:
Verify signal cable routing, shielding, termination, and grounding practices to ensure signal integrity and noise immunity.

  • Drawing Review & Redlining:
Review and update P&IDs, wiring schematics, cable schedules, and termination drawings to reflect as-built conditions.

  • Compliance & Inspection:
Conduct visual and continuity inspections of sensor wiring and provide support during QA/QC checks and third-party inspections.

  • Coordination with Other Disciplines:
Work with mechanical, electrical, and I&C teams to resolve installation clashes and ensure proper sensor placement and protection.

  • Punch List & Turnover Support:
Identify, track, and close sensor wiring-related punch list items to support system handover and pre-commissioning.

  • Safety & Standards Enforcement:
Enforce LOTO, PPE usage, and site-specific safety standards; ensure compliance with applicable codes (NEC, IEC, ISA, etc.).

Focus Areas:

  1. Sensor Type Specialization:
Deep knowledge of various sensor types – thermocouples, RTDs, proximity (inductive/capacitive), and Hall Effect sensors – including installation best practices.

  2. Wiring Integrity & Termination Practices:
Supervise high-quality terminations using ferrules, glands, and proper cable management techniques to prevent faults and signal loss.

  3. System Integration Readiness:
Ensure sensor wiring supports seamless integration with PLCs, DCS, or SCADA systems during loop checks and commissioning.

  4. Documentation & Reporting:
Maintain accurate progress reports, test records, and redlined drawings for turnover documentation.

  5. Mentorship & Technical Guidance:
Train junior and mid-level technicians on correct sensor wiring methods, troubleshooting, and industry standards.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or Trade Certification (ITI/Polytechnic) in Electrical, Instrumentation, or related discipline.

  • 8+ years of experience in sensor wiring or instrumentation installation, with 3+ years in a supervisory role.

  • Proven experience with temperature (RTD, thermocouples), proximity, and Hall Effect sensor wiring and integration.

  • Proficient in interpreting wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and instrument datasheets.

  • Familiarity with industrial control systems (PLC/DCS) and relevant signal types.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and safety management skills.

  • Working knowledge of electrical standards (ISA, IEC, NEC, IEEE).
