Senior Steel Fixers

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Role Purpose

Plan, coordinate, and execute reinforcement steel works for foundations, columns, walls, beams, slabs, stairs, parapets, and external works in line with approved drawings, Bar Bending Schedules (BBS), specifications, and Sharjah Municipality requirements—delivering first-time quality, safe operations, and on-programme progress under local weather and traffic/logistics constraints.

Key Responsibilities

1) Planning & Preparation

  • Study IFC/shop drawings and BBS; clarify laps, hooks, bends, couplers, cover, and congestion zones (raise RFIs as needed).

  • Organize lay-down areas, cutting/bending stations, and safe access; sequence rebar deliveries by pour priority.

  • Check availability and approvals of spacers/cover blocks, chairs, tie wire, couplers, continuity boxes, and embedded items.

2) Cutting, Bending & Tagging

  • Supervise accurate cutting/bending per BBS (e.g., BS 8666/ACI details as specified).

  • Ensure each bundle/bar is tagged with bar mark, diameter, length, and location; segregate different grades (e.g., ASTM A615/A706 or equivalent).

  • Prevent damage to ribs; control bending radii and straightening per spec.

3) Installation & Fixing

  • Set out and fix rebar to line/level/cover:

    • Foundations/raft/footings: bottom/top mats, shear links, column starters, dowel positions.

    • Columns/walls/cores: cages, ties, lap/coupler positions clear of construction joints.

    • Beams: bottom/top bars, hanger bars, stirrups, anchorage and anti-sag supports.

    • Slabs/stairs/landings/parapets: bottom/top mesh, distribution bars, edge trimming, upstands, openings.

  • Maintain clear cover using approved spacers; prevent displacement during concrete placement and vibration.

  • Coordinate MEP penetrations and sleeves; maintain rebar continuity or add trimming bars as detailed.

  • Manage coupler installation (threads, torque, inspection) or lapping to specified lengths.

4) Quality Control & Documentation

  • Present works for MIR/WIR; support bar-mark checks, cover checks, and pre-pour inspections.

  • Verify mill certificates/heat numbers match approved submittals; remove excessive rust/contamination; reject damaged bars.

  • Keep as-placed bar mark maps/photos for complex zones and record any approved site adjustments.

5) Coordination & Programme

  • Align daily targets with pour sequence, formwork readiness, and concrete booking.

  • Interface with Survey for levels and with formwork for stability/clearances; protect finished rebar from traffic and weather.

6) HSE

  • Enforce safe handling and manual lifting practices; use rebar caps on projections; maintain tidy work fronts.

  • Control hot-work (if welding per approval), electrical safety for cutters/benders, and housekeeping to prevent trips/impalement hazards.

  • Comply with scaffold/MEWP and edge-protection requirements when working at height.

Weather & Traffic Considerations (Sharjah/UAE)

  • Heat & Humidity:

    • Schedule heavy handling/tying for early morning/evening; comply with MOHRE summer midday break.

    • Use gloves for hot steel; shade and mist-cool reinforcement before pours to reduce concrete temperature rise and plastic shrinkage risk.

    • Keep couplers and threads clean/dry; extend curing and coordinate immediate post-pour protection.

  • Dust/Sand:

    • Store rebar on dunnage and cover; clean bars before fixing/pour to ensure bond; protect couplers/threads from sand ingress.

  • Occasional Rain/Coastal Effects:

    • Halt works on slippery decks; prevent standing water and contamination of rebar; use corrosion-resistant accessories where specified for coastal exposure.

  • Traffic & Logistics:

    • Plan off-peak or night deliveries of rebar; coordinate SRTA/Police permits if road occupation or crane setups affect public ways.

    • Provide banksmen for off-loading; stage bundles near work fronts without overloading slabs or blocking emergency routes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 7–10+ years rebar fixing (min 2–3 years UAE/GCC), including low/mid-rise RC buildings.

  • Strong reading of drawings/BBS; skilled in couplers, complex cages, congested joints, and cover control.

  • Familiar with relevant standards (project-specified ACI/BS/EN) and consultant inspection processes.

  • Basic English for coordination; Arabic/Urdu/Hindi an advantage.

Tools & Equipment (Typical)

Cutting/bending machine, rebar benders, tying tools (manual/automatic), torque wrench (for couplers), rebar caps, spacers/chairs, levels/laser, lifting tackles, pallets/dunnage, PPE (gloves, boots, goggles, helmet, harness).

Core Competencies

  • Accuracy (bar marks, laps/couplers, cover)

  • Productivity and crew leadership

  • Interface management with formwork, MEP, and concrete teams

  • Defect prevention at joints/openings/congested nodes

  • Safety discipline and housekeeping

KPIs

  • First-time pass on pre-pour inspections; cover and bar-mark compliance ≥ target.

  • Zero major rebar NCRs; prompt closure of minor snags.

  • Sequence adherence (cages/slab steel ready before formwork/MEP hold points).

  • Minimal rework at congested areas (columns-beam-slab nodes, stair cores).

  • Zero lost-time incidents; compliance with midday break and site traffic plan.
