Senior Excavation and Groundwork Crew

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Role Purpose

Plan, direct, and control all earthworks, trenching, foundation excavations, backfilling/compaction, dewatering, and temporary works to deliver safe, compliant, and on-program groundworks, aligned with Sharjah Municipality approvals and utility requirements, while managing weather and traffic/logistics constraints.

Key Responsibilities

1) Planning & Pre-Start

  • Review geotechnical report, IFC drawings, and method statements; produce task-specific risk assessments and ITPs for excavation, shoring, dewatering, and backfill/compaction.

  • Set out works with Survey: excavation lines/levels, batter/benching, toe-of-slope protection, foundation blinding levels, trench fall for services.

  • Obtain/verify NOCs and utility locates (SEWA power/water, telecom); lead permit to break ground process.

  • Define plant/machinery needs (excavators, breakers, compactors, pumps, generators) and laydown/haul routes.

2) Excavation, Trenching & Temporary Works

  • Supervise safe excavation for foundations, pits, manholes, service trenches per drawings and temporary works design (shoring/strutting/trench boxes/benching).

  • Control faces, slopes, and access; prevent over-excavation; protect adjacent structures and roads.

  • Install and monitor shoring and edge protection; maintain exclusion zones; manage spoil stockpiles and stability.

  • Coordinate service crossings, sleeves, and bedding details with MEP before backfill/close-out.

3) Dewatering & Groundwater Control

  • Set up well-points/sumps/pumps; maintain discharge lines and silt control; record pump hours and groundwater levels.

  • Arrange discharge approvals and avoid nuisance to public/street drainage; reinstate surfaces post-works.

4) Backfilling, Compaction & Testing

  • Approve backfill material (grading, moisture); manage layer thickness and compaction passes per spec.

  • Coordinate and witness FDT/sand-cone/nuclear density tests; address failures with re-work plans.

  • Prepare subgrade/sub-base for pavements and slabs; ensure CBR/PLT (plate-load) where specified.

5) Quality, Records & Inspections

  • Raise MIR/WIR, maintain test registers (density, CBR, concrete blinding), and redline as-built levels.

  • Keep daily diaries: manpower/plant, volumes moved, test results, incidents, photos.

  • Close NCRs promptly; protect finished blinding and foundations from contamination/damage.

6) HSE & Public Protection

  • Enforce excavation permits, gas testing where required, confined-space controls for deep pits, and rescue plans.

  • Toolbox talks (working near plant, buried services, collapse risks, traffic interface, heat stress).

  • Segregate pedestrians/plant; maintain banksmen at crossings; lighting and barriers for night works.

7) Authorities, Traffic & Logistics

  • Coordinate SRTA/Police permits for road occupancy, detours, and night deliveries; manage signage, cones, and marshals.

  • Liaise with Sharjah Municipality inspectors and utility reps for trench inspections and backfill approvals.

  • Program tipper/aggregate deliveries and off-peak haulage to reduce congestion and queueing.

Weather & Traffic Considerations (Sharjah/UAE)

  • Heat & Humidity:

    • Schedule heavy digging, shoring, and compaction in early morning/evening; comply with MOHRE summer midday break.

    • Implement heat-stress controls (hydration, shaded rest, buddy checks); monitor equipment overheating; adjust rolling/compaction moisture to avoid dry-out.

  • Dust/Sand:

    • Use water carts and suppression when cutting/excavating; cover stockpiles and trucks; protect adjacent properties and public areas.

    • Clean bearing surfaces prior to blinding/backfill placement.

  • Occasional Rain/Flash Water & Coastal Effects:

    • Provide temporary drains/sumps; protect pit edges from erosion; pause works during active rain; inspect shoring/faces after rainfall.

    • Use corrosion-resistant accessories where specified near coastal exposure.

  • Traffic & Access:

    • Plan night/off-peak trucking for spoil removal/backfill delivery; maintain clear emergency access; coordinate with nearby schools/prayer times.

    • Provide banksmen, detours, lighting, and audible warnings; maintain clean roads (wheel-wash/sweeping) to avoid fines.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 8–12 years groundworks/excavation supervision (min 3 years UAE/GCC), including building foundations and utility trenches.

  • Strong knowledge of temporary works/shoring, dewatering, compaction, and utility protection.

  • Ability to read drawings/levels and manage survey interfaces; competent with ITPs, permits, and test plans.

  • Familiar with Sharjah authority practices (Municipality inspections, SEWA/telecom NOCs, SRTA permits) and local waste management (Bee’ah).

  • English required; Arabic/Urdu/Hindi an advantage. Valid UAE driving license preferred.

Tools, Plant & Equipment (Typical)

20–30T excavators, mini-excavators, backhoe loaders, hydraulic breakers, trench boxes/shoring, rollers/plate compactors, water trucks, well-point pumps/sumps, generators, gas detector, survey kit (total station/level), barriers/signage, lighting towers, PPE.

Core Competencies

  • Safe systems of work & temporary works discipline

  • Production planning and resource control

  • Reading levels/setting-out and defect prevention

  • Quality/testing follow-through (density/CBR/PLT)

  • Clear coordination with utilities, inspectors, and the public

KPIs

  • Zero collapse/utility-strike incidents; zero lost-time injuries.

  • Density test pass rate ≥ target; rework < agreed threshold.

  • Excavation/blinding and backfill milestones achieved to programme.

  • First-time pass on trench/backfill inspections; clean roads/no fines.

  • Accurate as-built levels and complete daily records.
