Job Title: Safety Systems Engineer (Oil and Gas)

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Safety Systems Engineer is responsible for independently managing the maintenance, optimization, and troubleshooting of safety-critical systems in oil and gas operations. This role involves leading safety system projects, analyzing performance data, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams to enhance the reliability and efficiency of safety systems while mentoring junior staff and contributing to operational improvements.

Key Responsibilities:

System Maintenance and Optimization:

  • Perform advanced maintenance and calibration of safety systems, including fire and gas detection systems, emergency shutdown mechanisms, and pressure relief devices.
  • Develop and execute preventive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and ensure reliability.
  • Analyze system performance data to identify inefficiencies and recommend improvements.

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:

  • Diagnose and resolve complex issues in safety systems using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques.
  • Conduct root cause analyses for recurring issues and implement corrective action plans.
  • Collaborate with vendors and senior engineers to address critical technical challenges.

System Integration and Upgrades:

  • Lead the integration and commissioning of new safety systems, ensuring seamless compatibility with existing operations.
  • Validate and test upgraded systems to meet safety and regulatory standards.
  • Plan and execute retrofitting projects to improve safety system performance and compliance.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure all safety systems adhere to industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company protocols.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement measures to mitigate hazards in safety-critical operations.
  • Validate the functionality of emergency systems and contribute to improving workplace safety.

Project Management:

  • Manage medium-scale projects, including the installation and upgrade of safety systems.
  • Develop project timelines, budgets, and resource plans to ensure successful execution.
  • Collaborate with operations and leadership teams to align safety initiatives with organizational goals.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, calibration logs, and system performance metrics.
  • Prepare technical reports on safety system performance, incident findings, and improvement recommendations.
  • Contribute to updating and refining standard operating procedures (SOPs) for safety systems.

Collaboration and Mentorship:

  • Work closely with operations, maintenance, and safety teams to address safety system challenges.
  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing guidance on technical and safety-related tasks.
  • Act as a technical resource for addressing complex safety system issues.

  • System Optimization: Independently manage and optimize safety-critical systems for improved performance and reliability.
  • Safety Leadership: Drive compliance with safety standards and participate in risk mitigation strategies.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • In-depth knowledge of safety-critical systems, including gas detection, emergency shutdown mechanisms, and alarms.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for resolving complex safety system issues.
  • Proficiency in SCADA/DCS systems and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, HART, Profibus).
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations, risk management, and environmental compliance.
  • Project management skills for handling medium-scale installations, upgrades, and maintenance projects.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in advanced safety systems or project management (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA 30-Hour, PMP) are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in safety systems engineering, including maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage technical tasks and contribute to system improvements.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Expertise in diagnostic tools such as gas detectors, pressure calibrators, and multimeters.
  • Proficiency in SCADA platforms and safety instrumentation software.
  • Familiarity with predictive maintenance tools and advanced analytics for monitoring safety systems.
