Roles & Responsibilities

Job Summary:

We are seeking for a Safety Systems Engineer Manager who is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESD), Fire & Gas Detection (F&G), and High Integrity Protection Systems (HIPPS) across multiple projects or operational units. The role oversees functional safety compliance, guides the engineering lifecycle as per IEC 61511/IEC 61508, manages cross-functional teams, and ensures strategic alignment with organizational safety and reliability goals.


Key Focus Areas & Responsibilities:

1. Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for the safety systems engineering team across projects and operational plants.

  • Define and drive safety lifecycle policies, procedures, and standards aligned with international codes (IEC 61511, ISA S84).

  • Collaborate with leadership on safety system upgrades, digital transformation, and lifecycle planning for critical systems.

2. Functional Safety Management

  • Serve as the Functional Safety Authority or focal point for SIL compliance across the organization.

  • Oversee and approve SIL assessments, HAZOP/LOPA reviews, and SRS documentation.

  • Lead internal audits, third-party reviews, and risk mitigation strategies related to safety instrumented functions (SIFs).

3. Project Oversight & Execution

  • Review and approve system architecture, C&E matrices, logic diagrams, and interlock strategies for SIS/ESD/F&G systems.

  • Manage engineering deliverables, FAT/SAT schedules, and commissioning across multiple concurrent projects.

  • Ensure interface alignment between SIS, DCS/BPCS, and other automation platforms.

4. Team Management & Mentoring

  • Lead and mentor a multi-disciplinary team of safety system engineers, designers, and commissioning personnel.

  • Drive team development through training, knowledge sharing, and performance feedback.

  • Ensure all engineers are aware of and adhere to corporate safety and compliance policies.

5. Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor KPIs related to SIS availability, SIF performance, and test compliance.

  • Champion proof testing programs, system upgrades, and obsolescence management.

  • Lead root cause analysis for safety-related incidents and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

6. Stakeholder & Regulatory Engagement

  • Act as a key interface with project management, operations, third-party vendors, and regulatory bodies.

  • Support pre-commissioning, audits, and certification processes (e.g., TÜV, Exida) as needed.

  • Ensure full traceability of safety system documentation across the lifecycle.


Key Skills & Competencies:

  • Expert-level knowledge of safety systems and functional safety lifecycle.

  • Leadership in applying IEC 61511, IEC 61508, ISA S84, and related standards.

  • Proficiency in safety PLCs (e.g., Triconex, HIMA, ProSafe-RS, Siemens S7-400H).

  • Skilled in safety assessment tools: exSILentia, SILsolver, Fault Tree, RiskGraph, etc.

  • Strong communication, team leadership, and cross-functional coordination.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Instrumentation, Electronics, Electrical, or Safety Engineering.

  • 10+ years of experience in safety systems, including 5+ years in a lead or managerial role.

  • Certified Functional Safety Expert/Engineer (TÜV Rheinland / Exida) is highly preferred.

  • Proven experience in both project execution and plant operational safety.

  • Exposure to multi-national projects or joint ventures is a plus.
