The SCADA and RTU Field Technician (Mid-Level) is responsible for the field installation, configuration, and troubleshooting of SCADA systems and Remote Terminal Units (RTUs). This role involves working independently or in small teams to support communication setup, I/O testing, panel wiring, and remote monitoring systems integration across distributed industrial sites.
Install and wire RTUs, PLCs, modems, antennas, and power supplies at remote stations (e.g., pump stations, substations, treatment plants).
Configure RTUs, interface modules, and communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC 60870) for integration with central SCADA systems.
Conduct I/O checks, loop testing, signal simulation, and field validation of sensors, transmitters, and actuators.
Troubleshoot RTU communication issues, panel wiring faults, and field device integration errors.
Assist SCADA engineers with HMI signal verification, alarm response validation, and functional tests.
Perform preventive maintenance, firmware updates, and basic configuration backups for RTUs.
Interpret P&IDs, loop diagrams, control panel schematics, and network topology drawings.
Document all site activities including installation checklists, test results, and equipment logs.
Follow proper safety procedures including LOTO, electrical isolation, and confined space protocols.
Provide guidance to junior technicians during field jobs and support in mentoring as needed.
Diploma or Technical Degree in Instrumentation, Electronics, Electrical, or Automation Engineering
3–6 years of experience working with SCADA/RTU systems in industrial or utility field environments
Proficiency in RTU/PLC integration, field cabling, and troubleshooting telemetry communications
Familiarity with SCADA platforms (e.g., GE iFIX, Wonderware, Ignition, Schneider, Siemens)
Hands-on experience with Modbus, DNP3, or TCP/IP-based communication systems
Strong diagnostic and field troubleshooting skills
Ability to work independently at remote sites with minimal supervision
Competent in interpreting technical drawings and system documentation
Clear communication and technical reporting abilities
Safety-conscious and detail-oriented under operational pressures
