Job Title: SCADA Engineer (Power Plant)

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level SCADA Engineer is responsible for independently managing the configuration, optimization, and maintenance of SCADA systems in power plant operations. This role includes overseeing the integration of SCADA with Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and other power plant equipment. The engineer ensures system reliability, performs advanced troubleshooting, and supports projects such as system upgrades and commissioning while adhering to safety and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities:

System Configuration and Maintenance:

  • Configure and optimize SCADA systems to monitor and control turbines, generators, boilers, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Perform system maintenance, updates, and calibration to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Lead the integration of SCADA with DCS, PLCs, and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs).

System Monitoring and Troubleshooting:

  • Monitor SCADA system performance, analyze data, and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Conduct advanced diagnostics and root cause analysis to address recurring system problems.
  • Implement system enhancements and performance tuning to improve efficiency and reliability.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure all SCADA operations comply with industry standards (e.g., IEC, ISA) and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct safety risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate risks associated with SCADA systems.
  • Validate safety-critical SCADA functions, including emergency shutdown mechanisms.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Prepare detailed technical reports on SCADA performance, troubleshooting activities, and project outcomes.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of system configurations, updates, and compliance documentation.
  • Develop and refine standard operating procedures (SOPs) for SCADA system operations and maintenance.

Collaboration and Leadership:

  • Work closely with operations, maintenance, and safety teams to align SCADA system activities with organizational objectives.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Coordinate with vendors and contractors for technical support and system upgrades.

Project Management:

  • Manage medium-scale projects involving SCADA system upgrades, retrofits, and commissioning.
  • Develop project plans, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation, ensuring timely delivery.
  • Identify risks during project execution and implement strategies to address them effectively.

Key Focus Areas:

  • SCADA Systems: Manage configuration, monitoring, and optimization of SCADA platforms.
  • Power Plant Processes: Lead automation tasks for turbines, generators, boilers, and auxiliary systems.
  • System Integration: Oversee the integration of SCADA with DCS, PLC, and HMI systems.
  • Safety and Emergency Systems: Ensure reliability and compliance of safety-critical SCADA functions.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Advanced knowledge of SCADA systems and their integration with power plant operations.
  • Proficiency in programming SCADA platforms, including graphical interface design and alarm configuration.
  • Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, and Ethernet/IP.
  • Analytical and troubleshooting skills to address complex SCADA-related issues.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and risk management practices in industrial environments.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in SCADA, DCS, or PLC systems (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Honeywell) are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in SCADA system configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Proven ability to lead system integration and optimization tasks independently.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and loop calibrators.
  • Expertise in SCADA platforms like Siemens WinCC, Wonderware InTouch, or Honeywell Experion.
  • Familiarity with advanced analytics tools for monitoring and optimizing system performance.
