Rotordynamics Engineer

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a skilled Mid-Level Rotordynamics Engineer to lead critical aspects of rotordynamic analysis, design support, and vibration diagnostics for high-speed rotating equipment. This role plays a vital part in the lifecycle of turbomachinery systems—covering design validation, field troubleshooting, and root cause analysis for rotating components such as shafts, bearings, seals, and couplings.

The ideal candidate will be proficient in both analytical modeling and practical problem-solving in environments involving gas turbines, steam turbines, compressors, or pumps.

Key Responsibilities:

🔍 Rotordynamic Analysis & Modeling

  • Perform comprehensive rotordynamic simulations: lateral critical speed analysis, unbalance response, torsional vibration, whirl and whip behavior, and stability margins.

  • Use tools like DyRoBeS, XLROTOR, MADYN 2000, or ANSYS Mechanical APDL to develop rotor-bearing-seal system models.

  • Evaluate influence of rotor unbalance, misalignment, bearing stiffness, seal dynamics, and damping on overall system performance.

🧪 Testing & Troubleshooting

  • Plan and participate in factory acceptance tests (FAT), field testing, and commissioning of rotating equipment.

  • Analyze vibration data (Bode plots, waterfall diagrams, orbits) to identify root causes of instabilities or anomalies.

  • Support machinery diagnostics, trip event investigations, and field balancing efforts.

🧰 Design Review & Engineering Support

  • Work closely with design engineers to guide the mechanical design of shafts, bearings, couplings, and support structures.

  • Review equipment design drawings for potential vibration or resonance issues.

  • Recommend design improvements to mitigate dynamic problems and enhance rotordynamic stability.

📈 Data Analytics & Reporting

  • Interpret and synthesize large datasets from monitoring systems (e.g., Bently Nevada 3500/ADRE, SKF Multilog) for diagnostics.

  • Develop detailed reports, simulations, and performance assessments to inform design or reliability decisions.

🤝 Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with mechanical design, reliability, controls, and operations teams.

  • Interface with OEMs and third-party service providers for rotordynamic validation, retrofits, or failure analysis projects.

Qualifications:

🎓 Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent; Master’s degree in Vibration, Rotordynamics, or Machine Design preferred.

🧰 Experience:

  • 3–7 years of direct experience in rotordynamics, vibration analysis, or turbomachinery design/support.

  • Experience in high-speed rotating systems (gas/steam turbines, compressors, large motors, or expanders).

Technical Skills:

  • Strong understanding of vibration theory, rotor-bearing dynamics, modal analysis, damping mechanisms.

  • Proficiency with analysis tools: DyRoBeS, XLROTOR, MADYN, ANSYS Rotor Dynamics, MATLAB, or Python.

  • Familiar with condition monitoring systems: Bently Nevada, SKF, Brüel & Kjær.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities

  • Excellent technical writing and presentation skills

  • Attention to detail and ability to interpret complex data trends

  • Capable of independent work and leadership of junior team members
