The Mid-Level QA/QC Inspector is responsible for independently performing weld inspections and dimensional verification of shipboard piping and structural systems to ensure compliance with ABS, NAVSEA, and project-specific standards. The role includes preparing inspection documentation, identifying non-conformities, and supporting compliance for marine construction, overhaul, and system installation projects.
Weld Quality Inspection and Dimensional Verification of Marine Pipe and Structural Systems
Execute in-process and final inspections of welds and installations, ensuring fit-up, joint configuration, and final dimensions conform to class (ABS, NAVSEA) specifications and drawings.
Perform detailed visual inspections of welded joints, root pass integrity, and finish quality for structural and piping components.
Confirm joint preparation, alignment, gap tolerances, and weld parameters match approved WPS and procedure qualifications.
Verify installation dimensions of structural members, piping runs, and supports per layout drawings and tolerance standards.
Document inspection results using weld maps, checklists, nonconformance reports (NCRs), and quality records.
Coordinate with production teams to resolve weld-related quality issues and dimensional discrepancies.
Conduct in-process surveillance during fabrication and installation phases.
Verify material traceability and MTR documentation against project and class requirements.
Assist in preparation and execution of weld repair plans and re-inspections.
Support third-party and class society inspections, including NAVSEA and ABS representatives.
Maintain calibration and proper use of inspection tools (weld gauges, calipers, rulers, levels, etc.).
Ensure safety compliance during inspections, especially in confined spaces or elevated structures.
Diploma or technical certificate in Welding, Quality Assurance, Marine Engineering, or related trade.
3–5 years of QA/QC inspection experience in shipbuilding, marine fabrication, or a regulated industrial environment.
Solid understanding of welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW), weld symbols, and defect types.
Working knowledge of ABS and NAVSEA specifications, AWS D1.1, and ASME B31.1/B31.3 standards.
Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, P&IDs, and dimensional tolerancing.
Strong documentation and reporting skills using inspection templates and digital tracking systems.
AWS-CWI certification or progress toward certification strongly preferred.
NDT Level I/II in VT, PT, or MT is a plus.
Experience with pipe weld inspection and alignment in marine/shipyard settings.
Effective communication skills to interface with production, engineering, and third-party surveyors.
Strong attention to detail and a disciplined, methodical inspection approach.
