QA/QC Inspector – HVAC Installation and Functional Testing

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior QA/QC Inspector – HVAC Installation and Functional Testing is responsible for leading and executing all quality assurance and control activities related to the installation, inspection, and testing of HVAC systems on marine vessels and offshore platforms. This role ensures strict adherence to engineering specifications, classification society requirements, international HVAC codes, and safety regulations. The position also involves coordinating with project managers, construction leads, commissioning teams, and regulatory bodies to achieve a flawless quality outcome.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead the inspection of HVAC systems including chillers, AHUs, VAVs, ducting, fire dampers, exhaust systems, refrigeration lines, sensors, and automation panels.

    • Validate installations against drawings, specifications, ITPs (Inspection & Test Plans), and class/regulatory standards (ABS, DNV, USCG, ASHRAE, IMO).

    • Oversee functional testing, pre-commissioning, leak tests, airflow measurements, refrigerant charging validation, and sensor calibration.

    • Author and manage inspection procedures, checklists, punch lists, non-conformance reports (NCRs), and corrective action requests (CARs).

    • Supervise QA/QC inspection teams and coordinate daily quality control activities with site management and contractors.

    • Interface with classification society surveyors and client QA representatives to support inspections and approvals.

    • Review and approve QA turnover documentation, test records, and mechanical completion dossiers.

    • Ensure fire-rated ductwork and HVAC penetrations are installed and sealed to certified specifications.

    • Conduct root cause analysis and quality trend monitoring, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.

    • Support FAT and SAT of HVAC and related automation systems at factory and field sites.

    • Maintain a high standard of safety, compliance, and technical integrity across all inspection and QA activities.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Quality Leadership & Technical Oversight
    – Drive quality execution and adherence to HVAC specifications across multi-million-dollar marine and offshore projects.

  2. Inspection Strategy & Test Supervision
    – Lead critical inspection milestones and HVAC system validations throughout installation and commissioning.

  3. Compliance & Regulatory Assurance
    – Enforce alignment with IMO, SOLAS, ASHRAE, and class society rules for marine HVAC systems.

  4. Team Management & Coordination
    – Supervise junior inspectors, ensure documentation accuracy, and align with project schedules and quality gates.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, HVAC Technology, or equivalent.

    • 7–10 years of experience in QA/QC roles for HVAC or mechanical systems, with at least 4 years in marine or offshore environments.

    • Deep knowledge of HVAC system components, layouts, insulation, controls, and marine installation challenges.

    • Skilled in reading and interpreting technical drawings, HVAC schematics, isometrics, P&IDs, and control diagrams.

    • Proficient in inspection reporting, NCR handling, QA databases, and system turnover processes.

    • Strong working knowledge of classification society rules (ABS, DNV, Lloyd's) and standards (ISO 9001, ASHRAE, IMO, SOLAS).

    • Experienced in supervising QA/QC teams, mentoring junior staff, and resolving cross-discipline quality issues.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for client interfacing and report preparation.

    • Willing to travel offshore or internationally based on project assignment.

Preferred:

    • Certified in ISO 9001:2015 Lead Auditor, ASME or HVAC QC systems, or welding inspection (CSWIP, AWS).

    • Previous experience on LNG carriers, naval ships, cruise ships, or FPSO projects.

    • Familiarity with digital QA tools (SmartPlant, Procore, Hexagon, or similar).

    • Certified in BOSIET, HUET, or offshore survival training (as applicable).
