QA/QC Inspector – HVAC Installation and Functional Testing

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level QA/QC Inspector – HVAC Installation and Functional Testing is responsible for conducting and documenting detailed inspections of HVAC system installations and functional tests aboard ships and offshore platforms. This role ensures that all HVAC-related work complies with engineering drawings, project specifications, classification requirements, and applicable marine and offshore standards. The inspector works closely with engineering, construction, and commissioning teams to ensure timely and compliant system delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Inspect HVAC system installations including ductwork, chillers, AHUs, exhaust systems, piping, hangers, insulation, and controls for compliance with design documents and QA specifications.

    • Conduct walkdowns and quality surveillance throughout project phases (fabrication, installation, and commissioning).

    • Execute and witness functional testing of HVAC components including airflow measurement, pressure testing, refrigerant leak detection, electrical connectivity, sensor calibration, and control logic checks.

    • Review Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) and ensure all inspection activities are performed per plan.

    • Identify, document, and track non-conformities (NCRs) and coordinate corrective actions with construction and QA leads.

    • Verify the quality of fire and smoke damper installation, fire-rated ducting, and equipment support systems.

    • Assist in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) of HVAC components and systems.

    • Collaborate with commissioning engineers to ensure smooth system handover and quality close-out documentation.

    • Review and verify as-built documentation, test records, and turnover dossiers for client and class approvals.

    • Train and guide junior inspectors on inspection techniques and documentation standards.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Inspection Accuracy and Regulatory Compliance
    – Ensure installations meet marine standards (IMO, SOLAS, ABS, ASHRAE, etc.).

  2. System Testing and Validation
    – Conduct or witness system functional tests to validate performance against design intent.

  3. Non-Conformance Management
    – Document deviations, enforce corrective actions, and close QA/QC loops efficiently.

  4. Coordination and Documentation
    – Interface with site leads and maintain detailed inspection logs, checklists, and turnover records.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, HVAC Technology, or related field.

    • 3–6 years of relevant QA/QC experience, including at least 2 years in HVAC system inspection on ships, offshore platforms, or heavy industrial projects.

    • Strong knowledge of marine HVAC systems, components, layouts, and testing procedures.

    • Familiar with HVAC installation tolerances, support requirements, duct/leak testing, and commissioning flows.

    • Ability to interpret and mark up technical drawings, P&IDs, ducting layouts, and control schematics.

    • Experienced in writing inspection reports, NCRs, punch lists, and checklists.

    • Proficient with QA documentation systems and MS Office tools.

    • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with ability to interface across departments and contractors.

    • Capable of working offshore, in shipboard confined spaces, and in active construction zones.

Preferred:

    • Certifications in ISO 9001:2015, ASME/HVAC QA standards, or class society inspection procedures (ABS, DNV, USCG).

    • Training in HSE, BOSIET/STCW, or marine safety protocols.

    • Familiarity with digital QA/QC tools such as SmartPlant, Procore, or Hexagon.
