Roles & Responsibilities

The Junior QA/QC Inspector – HVAC Installation and Functional Testing supports the quality inspection process during the installation, testing, and commissioning of HVAC systems on marine vessels and offshore platforms. Under the supervision of senior inspectors, this role involves verifying workmanship, inspecting components for compliance with project specifications, participating in system testing, and documenting results to ensure HVAC installations meet regulatory and engineering standards.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Assist in inspecting HVAC equipment installations, including air handling units (AHUs), ductwork, chillers, compressors, and exhaust systems for correct positioning, mounting, and alignment.

    • Verify installation practices for compliance with drawings, specifications, and HVAC codes.

    • Conduct basic visual and dimensional inspections on ducting, insulation, brackets, hangers, and dampers.

    • Support pre-commissioning and functional testing, including airflow checks, pressure measurements, leak testing, and vibration assessments.

    • Help review and organize inspection reports, punch lists, and non-conformance documentation.

    • Attend and document results during HVAC equipment FAT (Factory Acceptance Tests) and SAT (Site Acceptance Tests).

    • Assist in verifying installation of sensors, thermostats, control panels, and wiring for HVAC automation.

    • Participate in walkdowns and quality surveillance activities, reporting deviations to senior QA staff.

    • Follow QA/QC checklists, ITPs (Inspection Test Plans), and project procedures.

    • Maintain accurate records, tagging, and documentation for traceability and project turnover.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Installation Quality Monitoring
    – Observe and verify mechanical and structural quality of HVAC installations.

  2. Functional Testing Support
    – Participate in the testing phase to help confirm system performance and proper configuration.

  3. Code & Standards Familiarization
    – Develop understanding of ABS, IMO, USCG, ASHRAE, and project-specific HVAC standards.

  4. Documentation & Reporting
    – Learn to compile inspection results, issue logs, and test reports as part of project QA deliverables.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Diploma or certificate in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, Marine Engineering, or Quality Control-related field.

    • 0–2 years of experience in HVAC systems, quality inspection, or construction QA/QC (internships accepted).

    • Familiarity with HVAC components, installation practices, and testing methods.

    • Basic understanding of engineering drawings, HVAC schematics, and ductwork layouts.

    • Willingness to learn marine classification rules, safety procedures, and documentation systems.

    • Strong attention to detail, good observation and record-keeping skills.

    • Capable of working in confined shipboard spaces and active construction environments.

    • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word); familiarity with QA forms, checklists, and logs.

Preferred:

    • Exposure to shipyard or offshore construction environments.

    • Knowledge of inspection test plans (ITPs) and mechanical completion workflows.

    • Training in basic ISO 9001 quality systems or marine QA/QC protocols.

    • Familiarity with ABS, USCG, DNV, or other classification society documentation standards.
