Power and Electrical Engineer

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Role Purpose

Engineer, coordinate, and supervise all electrical power systems—from design/shop drawings and authority approvals through installation, testing & commissioning (T&C) and handover—ensuring compliance with specifications, SEWA requirements, UAE Fire & Life Safety Code, and relevant IEC/BS standards. Deliver safe, reliable, and efficient electrical installations suited to Sharjah’s climate and site logistics.

Key Responsibilities

   Engineering & Design Coordination

  • Develop/validate SLD, load schedules, cable sizing, protection settings (selectivity & earth-fault), earthing/LP layouts, and panel schedules.

  • Produce builder’s-work drawings (openings/sleeves/trenches), equipment room layouts/clearances, and penetration firestopping schedules.

  • Coordinate with Architectural/Structural for routes, ceiling/shaft space, and with HVAC/MEP for equipment power and interlocks.

  • Ensure lighting design meets target lux levels and glare limits; plan emergency/exit lighting and zoning.

  • Maintain redline as-builts; raise RFIs and close design clashes promptly.

   Authority Approvals & SEWA Interface

  • Prepare/assist SEWA submissions: SLD, load sheet/diversity, meter room/cabinet layout, earthing, and cable/duct routes.

  • Track comments, re-submissions, inspection bookings, and energization milestones; secure material approvals as required.

   Procurement & Installation Supervision

  • Verify equipment selections (MDB/SMDB/DB IP rating, busbar ratings, AIC, temperature rise, forms of separation).

  • Supervise installation quality: containment supports/spacing, segregation from ELV/LPG, cable pulling/bend radii, glanding/terminations and torque records.

  • Confirm earthing/LP implementation (earth pits, ring main, bonding of metallic services; LP air terminals/down-conductors).

  • Check emergency/exit lighting circuits, central battery (if any), and labeling/asset tagging.

  • Ensure equipment rooms meet ventilation/clearance and SEWA access standards.

   Testing, Commissioning & Integration

  • Lead T&C: insulation resistance, continuity/polarity, earth resistance, IR thermography (as needed), functional tests of MDB/SMDB/DBs and controls.

  • Perform protection relay/MCCB settings & functional checks, phase rotation, and load trials.

  • Conduct lux and emergency-duration tests; verify generator/UPS (if any): no-load/full-load, ATS transfer, alarms.

  • Execute integrated cause-&-effect with Fire Alarm (lift recall, AHU shutdown, smoke/pressurization signals).

  • Close snags swiftly; compile signed T&C sheets.

   Quality Assurance & Documentation

  • Implement method statements/ITPs; manage MIR/WIR inspections.

  • Maintain traceability: cable test results, breaker settings sheets, earth/LP test logs, panel factory/bench test certificates.

  • Prepare O&M manuals, asset lists, spare parts, and training materials; hand over complete as-built drawings.

   Programme, Cost & Vendors

  • Issue 2/4/12-week look-ahead plans aligned with civil/MEP progress and SEWA schedule.

  • Track subcontractor productivity, variations, and long-lead items (switchgear, cable drums, generators/UPS).

   HSE & Site Controls

  • Enforce LOTO, live-work prohibitions, arc-flash awareness for LV, safe ladder/MEWP use, and cable drum handling.

  • Toolbox talks: shock risks, hot-work (if any), manual handling, housekeeping, and working at height.

Weather & Traffic Considerations (Sharjah/UAE)

  • Heat & Humidity

    • Plan roof/external works early morning/evening; comply with the MOHRE summer midday break.

    • Consider thermal derating of cables/switchgear; ensure meter/electrical rooms are ventilated; avoid terminating on overheated busbars.

    • Expect longer cure times for sealants/adhesives; protect batteries/UPS and electronics from high ambient.

  • Dust/Sand

    • Keep panels/enclosures closed; fit filters where ventilated; clean terminations before testing; seal open conduits and device boxes.

  • Occasional Rain/Coastal Influence

    • Confirm IP ratings for outdoor/facade luminaires and sockets; weatherproof penetrations, roof glands, and cable trays; use corrosion-resistant fixings where specified.

  • Traffic & Logistics

    • Schedule off-peak deliveries for switchgear and cable drums; obtain SRTA/Police permits if road occupation/crane lifts are needed.

    • Stage materials close to work fronts without overloading slabs; keep egress and inspection routes clear.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s/Diploma in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).

  • 7–10+ years UAE/GCC experience delivering LV building power systems on low/mid-rise projects.

  • Strong command of SEWA processes, UAE Fire & Life Safety interfaces, and relevant standards (IEC/BS/EN as per project).

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD mark-ups, load/VD/SCC calculations, and standard test instruments.

  • English required; Arabic an advantage. Valid UAE driving licence preferred.

Tools & Test Equipment (Typical)

Insulation/continuity tester (megger), earth tester, RCD/loop tester, multimeter/clamp meter, IR thermometer/thermal camera, lux meter, torque wrench, labelers, cable pullers/rollers, ladders/MEWP, PPE (arc-rated as applicable).

Core Competencies

  • Robust power system design checks (selectivity, SCC, VD)

  • Clean installation oversight & documentation discipline

  • Authority liaison & inspection readiness (SEWA/Consultant)

  • Integrated T&C with life-safety systems

  • Programme leadership and vendor coordination

KPIs

  • First-time pass on consultant/SEWA inspections ≥ target.

  • T&C completed to programme; emergency/exit lighting & FA interfaces pass integrated tests.

  • Zero critical NCRs; snags closed within SLA; minimal rework.

  • Accurate as-builts/O&M accepted on first submission.

  • Zero lost-time incidents; full compliance with midday break and TMPs.
