Job Title: Power Plant Instrumentation Engineer

Job Summary:

The Mid-Level Power Plant Instrumentation Engineer is responsible for managing the design, maintenance, and optimization of instrumentation and control systems in power generation facilities. This role involves independently handling troubleshooting, performance monitoring, and system upgrades while ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. The engineer also provides technical support to junior team members and collaborates with cross-functional teams to enhance operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

System Operation and Maintenance:

  • Independently manage the operation, calibration, and maintenance of instrumentation systems for turbines, generators, and boilers.
  • Ensure the reliable operation of SCADA, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and other automation platforms.
  • Oversee the installation and commissioning of instrumentation and control systems in new or existing power plant operations.

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:

  • Conduct detailed diagnostics to identify and resolve complex issues in instrumentation systems, including safety and emergency shutdown systems.
  • Perform root cause analysis for recurring system failures and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Collaborate with vendors and contractors to resolve advanced technical challenges.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure systems comply with industry regulations and standards such as IEC, ISA, and ISO.
  • Conduct safety and risk assessments for high-priority systems and implement necessary controls.
  • Lead periodic testing of safety and emergency shutdown systems to ensure operational readiness.

System Performance Monitoring:

  • Monitor and analyze system performance metrics to identify inefficiencies and propose optimization strategies.
  • Develop and implement system improvement initiatives to enhance operational reliability and efficiency.
  • Maintain detailed performance logs and generate reports for internal reviews and audits.

Collaboration and Leadership:

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Work closely with operations, maintenance, and safety teams to align instrumentation systems with organizational goals.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings to discuss and address system performance, challenges, and solutions.

Project Management:

  • Manage mid-sized projects related to instrumentation upgrades, retrofits, or system optimizations.
  • Develop project schedules, budgets, and resource allocation plans to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Oversee contractor activities to ensure adherence to project specifications and standards.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Power Generation Control Systems: Oversee and optimize instrumentation for turbines, generators, and boilers.
  • SCADA and Distributed Control Systems (DCS): Manage and troubleshoot SCADA/DCS systems to ensure seamless operations.
  • Thermal and Nuclear Plant Control Systems: Maintain and enhance control systems specific to thermal and nuclear plants.
  • Safety and Emergency Shutdown Systems: Ensure the reliability of safety-critical systems through advanced diagnostics and testing.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Advanced knowledge of power plant instrumentation systems, including sensors, transmitters, and actuators.
  • Proficiency in SCADA, DCS, and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, HART, and Profibus.
  • Expertise in troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex control systems.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations, risk assessments, and emergency procedures.
  • Familiarity with power generation processes, including thermal and nuclear operations.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications in SCADA, DCS, or industrial automation systems are highly desirable.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in power plant instrumentation or a related field.
  • Proven ability to manage maintenance and troubleshooting of advanced control systems in industrial applications.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Advanced tools such as multimeters, loop calibrators, oscilloscopes, and vibration analyzers.
  • Proficiency in software platforms like Siemens TIA Portal, ABB DCS, Honeywell Experion, or Yokogawa CENTUM.

Other Requirements:

  • Strong leadership and communication skills to mentor team members and interact with stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize under tight deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and participate in fieldwork as required.
  • Commitment to maintaining safety, quality, and environmental compliance in all operations.
