Job Title: Power Plant Automation Engineer
Job Summary:
The Senior Power Plant Automation Engineer is responsible for leading the design, implementation, optimization, and maintenance of automation systems in power generation facilities. This role involves managing large-scale projects, troubleshooting complex automation issues, and ensuring the reliability and efficiency of systems such as SCADA, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI). The Senior Engineer provides technical expertise, mentors junior staff, and collaborates with cross-functional teams to drive innovation and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
System Design and Implementation:
- Lead the design, programming, and integration of automation systems, including SCADA, DCS, PLCs, and HMIs.
- Oversee the commissioning and calibration of advanced automation systems to ensure compliance with operational requirements.
- Validate control logic, interlocks, and configurations to optimize system performance and integration.
System Maintenance and Optimization:
- Manage advanced diagnostics and root cause analysis for complex issues in automation systems.
- Develop and implement strategies for system optimization to enhance reliability and efficiency.
- Lead system upgrades, retrofits, and performance improvement initiatives for legacy automation platforms.
Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution:
- Conduct in-depth analysis to identify and resolve critical issues in automation and control systems.
- Collaborate with vendors and contractors to address and resolve technical challenges.
- Recommend and implement long-term solutions to prevent recurring system faults.
Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure all automation activities adhere to industry standards (e.g., IEC, ISA) and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct safety risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies for critical automation systems.
- Oversee the validation, testing, and maintenance of safety-critical systems, including emergency shutdown mechanisms.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports on system performance, diagnostics, and project outcomes for stakeholders.
- Maintain detailed records of system configurations, calibration data, and compliance documentation.
- Develop and refine standard operating procedures (SOPs) and training materials for automation systems.
Leadership and Collaboration:
- Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior and mid-level engineers, fostering skill development.
- Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and safety teams to align automation activities with organizational objectives.
- Act as the primary point of contact for stakeholders, including clients, vendors, and regulatory authorities, regarding automation systems.
Project Management:
- Lead large-scale projects involving the installation, retrofitting, or optimization of automation systems.
- Manage project schedules, budgets, and resource allocation, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
- Identify and mitigate risks during project execution to ensure quality and compliance.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement:
- Evaluate and implement emerging technologies to enhance automation system performance and reliability.
- Lead initiatives to integrate advanced diagnostic tools, predictive maintenance practices, and optimization strategies.
- Stay updated on industry advancements and recommend innovative solutions to improve operations.

Skills and Knowledge Required:
- Extensive knowledge of automation systems, including SCADA, DCS, PLCs, and HMIs.
- Expertise in programming languages such as Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram (FBD), and Structured Text.
- Advanced proficiency in industrial communication protocols like Modbus, Profibus, and Ethernet/IP.
- Strong diagnostic and analytical skills for troubleshooting and optimizing complex automation systems.
- Comprehensive understanding of safety regulations, risk management, and emergency procedures.
Educational Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Advanced certifications in SCADA, DCS, or PLC systems (e.g., Siemens, ABB, Honeywell) are highly desirable.
Experience:
- 7-10 years of experience in automation systems, with a proven track record in leading projects and optimizing operations in power generation facilities.
- Demonstrated expertise in troubleshooting and resolving advanced automation issues.
Tools and Technologies:
- Proficiency in advanced diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes, vibration analyzers, and thermal cameras.
- Expertise in software platforms like Siemens TIA Portal, Honeywell Experion, ABB DCS, or Yokogawa CENTUM.
- Familiarity with data analytics tools for monitoring and improving automation system performance.
