Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Job Title: Piping Design Engineer

Job Summary:

We are looking for an experienced Piping Design Engineer – Mid-Level to join our engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for the design, development, and management of piping systems for industrial and commercial projects. As a mid-level engineer, you will work with cross-functional teams to ensure the designs meet both project and client requirements, ensuring systems are functional, safe, and compliant with industry codes and standards. You will lead design efforts, manage projects, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with other engineering disciplines to optimize overall system designs.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Piping System Design and Drafting:

    • Lead the design and drafting of piping systems, layouts, and schematics using CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, or similar).
    • Develop detailed drawings and 3D models of piping systems, ensuring that all systems are functional and meet design requirements.
    • Create and maintain piping design specifications, including material selection, pressure requirements, and flow rates.
  2. Design Coordination and Collaboration:

    • Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and structural engineers to integrate piping designs into larger system layouts.
    • Coordinate with other departments (procurement, construction, and safety) to ensure the design is feasible and complies with industry standards.
    • Collaborate with project managers to meet project timelines, budgets, and client expectations.
  3. Ensure Compliance with Standards and Regulations:

    • Ensure that all piping designs comply with relevant codes and regulations (e.g., ASME, API, ANSI, and ASTM).
    • Perform design calculations to verify the strength and integrity of the piping system, ensuring it meets operational and safety standards.
    • Review and validate designs to ensure they adhere to client specifications, industry codes, and environmental requirements.
  4. Review and Analysis of Design Data:

    • Analyze data from various sources to optimize the piping design, focusing on material selection, system efficiency, and overall performance.
    • Identify areas for design improvement or cost reduction without compromising safety, performance, or quality.
    • Resolve any design discrepancies or challenges by applying sound engineering principles.
  5. Project Management and Scheduling:

    • Lead and manage piping design projects, ensuring the design is completed on time, within scope, and on budget.
    • Prepare project timelines, resource allocation, and progress reports to ensure effective project delivery.
    • Track project milestones and work with cross-functional teams to ensure deliverables are met.
  6. Mentorship and Training:

    • Mentor junior engineers, providing guidance and support on design tasks, technical problems, and industry best practices.
    • Lead design reviews and offer constructive feedback to improve the overall quality of work.
    • Assist in the professional development of less experienced engineers and help them build skills in piping design, CAD software, and code compliance.
  7. Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of piping system designs, revisions, and changes.
    • Prepare detailed reports and presentations for management, clients, and regulatory bodies.
    • Ensure that all necessary documentation is properly filed and readily accessible for future reference.
  8. Safety and Quality Assurance:

    • Ensure that all designs are developed and implemented in compliance with safety standards and quality assurance procedures.
    • Participate in safety audits, risk assessments, and the development of safety protocols related to piping systems.
    • Lead efforts to minimize risks and enhance the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of piping designs.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Piping System Design and Optimization:

    • Focus on designing and optimizing piping systems that meet project specifications, safety requirements, and industry standards.
  2. Collaboration and Coordination:

    • Work with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of piping designs into larger systems, providing solutions to complex engineering challenges.
  3. Project Leadership:

    • Manage and lead piping design projects, ensuring timely and efficient delivery of design outputs.
  4. Safety and Compliance:

    • Ensure all designs comply with safety standards, codes, and regulations, promoting a culture of safety across design activities.

Qualifications and Skills:

  1. Educational Requirements:

    • A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
    • Relevant coursework or training in piping design, fluid mechanics, or industrial systems is beneficial.
  2. Experience:

    • 3-5 years of professional experience in piping design or mechanical engineering, with a focus on designing and drafting piping systems for industrial projects.
    • Experience with CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, or similar) for creating piping layouts, schematics, and 3D models.
    • Knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API, ANSI, ASTM) and the ability to apply them to designs.
  3. Skills:

    • Strong proficiency in piping design and drafting using CAD software and design tools.
    • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to optimize designs for efficiency and performance.
    • Strong understanding of material properties, pressure systems, and fluid dynamics as they relate to piping design.
    • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present and explain design concepts to clients, management, and other team members.
  4. Certifications (Preferred):

    • Certification in piping design or mechanical systems, such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license or certifications from relevant professional bodies (e.g., ASME, API).
