The Senior Pipefitter is responsible for leading the fabrication, layout, and installation of complex shipboard piping systems with a high degree of independence and technical accuracy. This role serves as a key technical expert and mentor within the pipefitting team, ensuring conformance to engineering specifications, classification society requirements, and shipyard quality standards.
Lead planning, layout, and routing of complex piping systems based on engineering drawings, P&IDs, isometrics, and marine construction standards.
Supervise and perform pipe fabrication, including cutting, beveling, threading, bending, and preparation for joining (welded, flanged, or mechanical).
Execute and oversee the installation and alignment of shipboard piping systems for propulsion, HVAC, fuel, bilge, ballast, and firefighting applications.
Inspect and verify pipe runs, connections, and system integrity using gauges, alignment tools, and QA documentation.
Direct and perform hydrostatic, pneumatic, and operational pressure testing of systems; ensure documentation meets class society (ABS, DNV, NAVSEA) requirements.
Train and mentor junior and mid-level pipefitters on fabrication methods, tool use, safety, and industry best practices.
Coordinate across disciplines (welding, mechanical, HVAC, electrical) to ensure integration and installation sequencing.
Identify material needs, tooling requirements, and support efficient job staging.
Ensure adherence to all safety procedures, confined space entry protocols, hot work permitting, and PPE requirements.
Report progress, installation issues, and technical challenges to supervisors and engineering teams.
Technical diploma, apprenticeship, or certification in pipefitting, marine mechanical trades, or ship construction.
6+ years of direct marine pipefitting experience, including lead or supervisory responsibility.
Expertise in interpreting ship piping diagrams, layout drawings, spool sheets, and class society standards.
Proven ability to fabricate and install pipe systems using copper-nickel, carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy piping.
Strong working knowledge of marine piping codes and standards (ABS, USCG, NAVSEA, DNV, ASME B31.3/B31.1).
Experience with pipe testing, flushing, and pre-commissioning activities.
Capable of leading multi-trade coordination in tight quarters or during drydock timelines.
Leadership experience in new construction, retrofit, or repair of naval, commercial, or offshore vessels.
High attention to detail, layout precision, and welding fit-up quality.
Excellent communication, mentoring, and organizational skills.
Flexibility to work shifts, overtime, and in shipboard environments including confined or elevated spaces.
