The Junior Pipefitter supports the fabrication, assembly, and installation of pipe systems on marine vessels under the supervision of experienced pipefitters. This role involves working with various piping materials and systems used in propulsion, HVAC, ballast, and fuel transfer applications.
Assist in measuring, cutting, and preparing pipe sections from drawings or under direction.
Support layout and fit-up of pipe systems according to schematics, P&IDs, and spool drawings.
Operate basic hand and power tools, including pipe threading machines, grinders, and beveling tools.
Help with installation of pipe runs, valves, supports, and fittings onboard ships in tight or confined spaces.
Assist with tack welding or mechanical joining (threaded, flanged, grooved, etc.) as instructed.
Ensure accurate marking, alignment, and support of pipe systems to meet marine standards.
Work with senior pipefitters and welders to conduct leak tests, hydrostatic or air pressure tests.
Follow all shipyard safety protocols, including PPE use and confined space entry guidelines.
Maintain clean and organized work areas and assist with tool/equipment setup and maintenance.
Learn to read and interpret technical drawings, piping symbols, and specifications.
High school diploma or technical school certification in pipefitting, plumbing, or related trades.
0–2 years of experience in a marine, shipyard, or industrial pipefitting environment (internships or training programs acceptable).
Familiarity with basic marine piping tools and measuring equipment.
Basic understanding of pipe materials (carbon steel, copper-nickel, stainless steel, PVC, etc.) and fittings.
Physically fit and able to lift/move heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
Eagerness to learn and develop marine-specific trade skills.
Team-oriented with good communication and reliability.
Willingness to work flexible shifts, including weekends or extended hours when needed.
Exposure to shipboard environments and understanding of maritime standards (ABS, USCG, NAVSEA) is a plus.
