Job Title: Packaging and Labeling Automation Engineer
Job Summary:
The Senior Packaging and Labeling Automation Engineer is responsible for leading the strategic development, implementation, and optimization of automated packaging and labeling systems within manufacturing environments. This leadership role involves overseeing the design, integration, and continuous improvement of systems that enhance operational efficiency, improve product quality, and ensure regulatory compliance. The Senior Engineer will manage complex automation projects, mentor junior engineers, troubleshoot advanced system issues, and drive technological innovation in packaging and labeling automation to support production goals.
Key Responsibilities:
System Strategy, Design, and Optimization:
- Lead the design, implementation, and continuous optimization of automated packaging and labeling systems, including PLC programming, robotic systems, conveyors, and labeling machines.
- Develop long-term strategies for the optimization of packaging and labeling automation systems to improve speed, reduce defects, and ensure compliance with production standards.
- Oversee the selection, design, and integration of new technologies, such as AI-powered vision systems, robotics, and advanced conveyor systems, into packaging and labeling operations.
Project Management and Execution:
- Lead and manage large-scale automation projects, from concept through to commissioning, ensuring all technical and operational requirements are met within scope, budget, and timelines.
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams (engineering, production, quality control, and IT) to implement solutions that align with overall business and production goals.
- Oversee the integration of new packaging and labeling automation systems with existing equipment and production lines, ensuring smooth transitions and minimal disruption to operations.
Troubleshooting and System Optimization:
- Troubleshoot and resolve advanced issues with packaging and labeling automation systems, ensuring that systems operate with minimal downtime and in compliance with operational standards.
- Conduct root cause analysis on complex system failures, providing long-term solutions to improve system reliability and operational efficiency.
- Implement and oversee preventive maintenance strategies to ensure all automation equipment functions optimally and adheres to safety and quality standards.
Process Improvement and Innovation:
- Identify areas for process improvement within the packaging and labeling automation systems, using data analysis and performance monitoring tools to optimize machine performance, reduce waste, and improve labeling accuracy.
- Introduce new technologies, automation methodologies, and industry best practices that drive operational excellence and ensure compliance with industry regulations.
- Lead initiatives to reduce downtime, improve labeling accuracy, and increase throughput, leveraging tools such as Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma.
Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance:
- Ensure all packaging and labeling systems comply with industry regulations (e.g., FDA, GMP, ISO 9001) and maintain compliance with labeling laws, packaging standards, and safety requirements.
- Oversee audits of packaging and labeling systems to ensure compliance with internal and external quality standards.
- Develop and maintain documentation for quality control, process validation, and regulatory compliance, ensuring all system configurations and adjustments are well-documented for audits.
Mentoring and Leadership:
- Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior and mid-level engineers, sharing best practices, troubleshooting techniques, and design philosophies.
- Facilitate training and development programs for staff and operators, ensuring that the team remains well-versed in automation systems, regulatory changes, and process control.
- Lead by example, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and accountability within the packaging and labeling automation team.
Cross-Functional Collaboration and Stakeholder Management:
- Collaborate with senior management, production, and operations teams to align packaging and labeling system improvements with production targets and overall business goals.
- Engage with external vendors and partners to source the latest automation technology, systems, and equipment that enhance packaging and labeling processes.
- Maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders, including production managers, IT teams, and quality assurance, to ensure effective system integration and operational alignment.
Performance Monitoring and Data Analysis:
- Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor the effectiveness of automated packaging and labeling systems, including metrics such as uptime, throughput, defect rates, and system utilization.
- Lead the collection, analysis, and reporting of operational data to provide insights into system performance and highlight areas for improvement.
- Use data-driven decision-making to improve systems, identify trends, and propose adjustments that increase productivity and reduce waste.
Skills and Knowledge Required:
- Extensive experience in the design, programming, and optimization of automated packaging and labeling systems, including PLCs, SCADA, robotic systems, and vision systems.
- Strong knowledge of industrial automation, control systems, and process control techniques, specifically for packaging and labeling applications.
- In-depth experience with system integration, troubleshooting, and performance optimization in automated manufacturing environments.
- Familiarity with advanced automation technologies such as robotics, AI-driven inspection systems, and IoT applications in manufacturing.
- Strong proficiency in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other process optimization methodologies to drive continuous improvement in packaging and labeling operations.
- Expertise in regulatory compliance related to packaging and labeling (e.g., FDA, GMP, ISO 9001) and ensuring quality control in automated systems.
- Advanced problem-solving, root cause analysis, and technical troubleshooting skills in complex automation systems.
- Strong project management skills, including experience managing budgets, schedules, and resources for large-scale automation projects.
Educational Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Certifications in PLC programming, Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or automation systems are highly desirable.
Experience:
- 7+ years of experience in automation engineering, with at least 3 years in a leadership or senior-level role focusing on packaging and labeling automation systems.
- Proven track record of leading large-scale automation projects and optimizing packaging and labeling processes in manufacturing environments.
- Experience with PLC programming, SCADA systems, robotics, and advanced packaging machinery is essential.
- In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements for packaging and labeling processes and a history of ensuring compliance in automation projects.
Tools and Technologies:
- Expertise in PLC programming software (e.g., Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000).
- Experience with SCADA platforms (e.g., Wonderware, Ignition), HMI, and industrial control systems.
- Proficiency with robotics programming and vision systems in packaging and labeling applications.
- Familiarity with data analysis and reporting tools (e.g., Power BI, Minitab, SQL, Excel) for performance monitoring and decision-making.
