Roles & Responsibilities

Job Summary:

The Junior PLC Engineer is responsible for assisting in the design, programming, installation, and maintenance of PLC-based control systems. This entry-level position offers hands-on experience in industrial automation, with a focus on PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) programming, troubleshooting, and system integration. Under the supervision of senior engineers, the Junior PLC Engineer will gain practical experience in working with automation technologies, electrical control systems, and process optimization.

Key Responsibilities:

PLC Programming and Configuration:

  • Assist in the programming and configuration of PLC systems for industrial applications, including writing, testing, and troubleshooting PLC code (e.g., Ladder Logic, Structured Text).
  • Support the integration of PLC systems with other control systems, such as SCADA, HMI, sensors, and actuators.
  • Modify and optimize existing PLC programs based on project requirements, performance goals, or client specifications.

System Installation and Integration:

  • Help with the installation and setup of PLC-based automation systems, including wiring, configuration, and testing of PLC hardware and software.
  • Assist in connecting PLCs to other automation systems, such as sensors, actuators, and control panels, ensuring seamless communication and proper functionality.
  • Participate in system integration activities, verifying that PLCs and other systems are correctly installed and meet operational specifications.

Troubleshooting and Maintenance:

  • Assist in troubleshooting PLC systems, control panels, and associated equipment to identify and resolve issues.
  • Perform routine maintenance on PLC systems, including software updates, hardware inspections, and calibration of components.
  • Support senior engineers in diagnosing complex system faults and providing corrective actions to minimize downtime.

System Testing and Commissioning:

  • Help conduct testing on PLC systems to ensure that they are operating according to design specifications and meet performance standards.
  • Assist in commissioning new systems, running tests to verify all components are functioning properly.
  • Support the validation of control strategies and automation processes in live environments.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of system installations, configurations, modifications, and maintenance activities.
  • Help prepare system documentation, including wiring diagrams, PLC programs, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Generate reports on system performance, including issues encountered, actions taken, and recommended improvements.

Learning and Development:

  • Continuously develop technical knowledge in PLC programming, control systems, and industrial automation technologies.
  • Participate in training programs, workshops, and educational courses to improve your skills in PLC programming and control systems design.
  • Stay up-to-date with new technologies and industry trends in automation.

Health and Safety Compliance:

  • Follow safety protocols, including lock-out/tag-out procedures, when working with electrical systems and automation equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, electrical codes, and regulations during system installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Work to ensure that all projects and tasks are carried out with a focus on safety, minimizing potential hazards.

Collaboration and Teamwork:

  • Work closely with senior engineers and other team members to complete tasks on time and according to project requirements.
  • Provide technical support to other departments and colleagues as needed, ensuring smooth project execution.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, providing updates on task progress, challenges, and resolutions.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Basic understanding of PLC programming languages, including Ladder Logic, Structured Text, and Function Block Diagram.
  • Familiarity with electrical circuits, control panels, sensors, actuators, and industrial control systems.
  • Knowledge of industrial automation systems, including PLCs, SCADA, and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) systems.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills to troubleshoot issues in PLCs and control systems.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Strong attention to detail and focus on quality and safety.
  • Good communication skills to work effectively with team members and other departments.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Relevant coursework or academic projects related to PLC programming, automation, or electrical control systems is a plus.
  • Certifications in PLC programming, electrical systems, or automation are advantageous but not required.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Power Distribution Networks

  • Assisting in integrating and optimizing PLC systems for automation within power distribution networks.
  • SCADA and PLC Systems

  • Programming, debugging, and maintaining PLC systems while ensuring seamless communication with SCADA systems.
  • Electrical Safety Standards and Codes (IEC, NEC)

  • Ensuring compliance with IEC, NEC, and related safety standards during PLC design, installation, and operation.

Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience in PLC programming, control systems, or industrial automation.
  • Previous experience from internships, academic projects, or hands-on work with PLCs and automation systems is beneficial but not required.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Familiarity with PLC programming software (e.g., Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000, Allen-Bradley) is beneficial.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical testing equipment, such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and PLC diagnostic tools.
  • Exposure to SCADA systems or HMI development is a plus, but not required.
