Job Title: Mechanical Helper
Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Helper to join our team. As a Senior Mechanical Helper, you will provide critical support in maintaining, repairing, and optimizing mechanical systems, engines, and equipment on marine vessels or facilities. With your advanced mechanical skills, you will play a key role in diagnosing and troubleshooting complex mechanical issues, guiding junior and mid-level mechanics, and ensuring all systems are operating efficiently and safely. This role requires a deep understanding of mechanical systems, the ability to perform hands-on repair work, and leadership skills to support team members.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead Mechanical Maintenance and Repairs:
- Perform advanced maintenance and repairs on mechanical systems such as propulsion systems, engines, pumps, hydraulic systems, and auxiliary machinery.
- Troubleshoot complex mechanical issues using advanced diagnostic tools and techniques to identify the root causes of failures and implement effective solutions.
- Lead efforts to improve the performance and longevity of mechanical systems through proactive maintenance and repairs.
System Inspections and Diagnostics:
- Conduct thorough inspections of mechanical equipment and systems, including engines, propulsion, and auxiliary machinery, to assess their condition and identify potential issues.
- Utilize advanced diagnostic equipment and techniques to detect inefficiencies, wear, or damage in mechanical systems, and take corrective actions as necessary.
- Ensure all systems are functioning according to operational standards and compliance with safety regulations.
Leadership and Mentorship:
- Provide leadership and guidance to junior and mid-level mechanical helpers, supporting their technical development and skill growth.
- Mentor less experienced team members, providing training on mechanical maintenance procedures, safety protocols, and best practices.
- Coordinate and oversee the work of other team members, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently, safely, and in accordance with quality standards.
Collaboration with Senior Engineers and Mechanics:
- Work closely with senior engineers and mechanics to solve complex mechanical issues and support larger maintenance or repair projects.
- Provide valuable input on mechanical operations, suggesting improvements to processes and systems to increase efficiency and reduce downtime.
- Assist in implementing engineering changes and modifications to improve the performance of mechanical systems.
Safety and Compliance:
- Lead the implementation of safety protocols during mechanical maintenance, ensuring that all safety guidelines are followed and that the work environment is safe.
- Ensure all mechanical work adheres to regulatory standards, including safety codes, environmental regulations, and industry guidelines.
- Conduct safety checks and provide guidance to junior staff on proper safety practices and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance work, repairs, inspections, and the condition of mechanical systems, ensuring all documentation complies with company policies and industry regulations.
- Prepare detailed reports on inspections, repairs, and work performed, and communicate findings to management and engineering teams.
- Monitor and track the performance of mechanical systems, documenting any recurring issues or patterns and recommending corrective actions.
Continuous Improvement and Process Optimization:
- Identify opportunities for process improvements in mechanical maintenance, aiming to increase operational efficiency and reduce downtime.
- Stay updated on the latest industry developments, tools, and techniques, and integrate new technologies into maintenance practices to enhance system performance.
- Collaborate with senior management and engineering teams to implement best practices and optimize the overall maintenance strategy.

Qualifications and Skills:
Educational Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- Any additional certifications in mechanical maintenance, marine systems, or specific equipment brands (e.g., Volvo Penta, Cummins, Yanmar) is a plus.
Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in mechanical maintenance or repair, with a strong background in marine systems, engines, and mechanical troubleshooting.
- Proven experience in diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical issues, with a solid understanding of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Experience in mentoring or supervising junior staff is preferred.

Certifications (Preferred):
