The Senior Mechanical Fitter leads and executes complex installation, alignment, and maintenance of marine valves and pipe systems in shipboard and shipyard environments. This role demands technical expertise, leadership in field execution, and coordination with engineering, quality, and inspection teams to ensure mechanical integrity, compliance, and timely completion of work scopes.
Supervise and execute the installation, alignment, and secure fitting of marine valves and associated pipe assemblies across various ship systems (cooling, fuel, bilge, ballast, fire main, etc.).
Interpret complex isometric drawings, general arrangement (GA) layouts, and valve datasheets to guide precision installation.
Plan and lead hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure testing, flushing, and mechanical integrity checks of pipe systems.
Perform advanced mechanical work such as alignment of valve actuators, tolerance verification, gasket selection, and proper torque application.
Coordinate closely with welders, NDT inspectors, marine engineers, and class surveyors to ensure project compliance and technical accuracy.
Troubleshoot fitting or alignment issues and recommend corrective actions based on field conditions.
Ensure all work follows marine industry codes (e.g., ABS, DNV, IMO), safety protocols, and quality control standards.
Mentor and train junior and mid-level fitters on procedures, safety practices, and drawing interpretation.
Maintain detailed job records, including daily progress, test reports, and as-built documentation.
Valve & Pipe System Leadership: End-to-end ownership of valve installation and pipe assembly scopes, from preparation to testing.
System Expertise: Deep understanding of shipboard piping systems and valve interactions in propulsion, utility, and safety-critical systems.
Precision Installation: Advanced skills in mechanical fitting, including alignment, bolting, joint integrity, and actuator interfacing.
Testing & Inspection Readiness: Lead leak/pressure testing and support class or client inspections with full documentation and procedural compliance.
Compliance & Workmanship: Ensure adherence to international marine classification standards (ABS, DNV, USCG) and shipyard quality benchmarks.
Team Coordination: Supervise multi-trade teams, align installation timelines with project goals, and resolve site-level challenges proactively.
Diploma or Technical Certification in Mechanical/Marine Engineering or equivalent.
6+ years of hands-on experience in mechanical fitting of marine valves and piping, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead fitter role.
Proficient in mechanical layout reading, marine system routing, and pipe support integration.
Strong understanding of materials (CuNi, stainless steel, carbon steel) and appropriate jointing methods.
Experience with hot work permits, confined space entry, and shipyard safety standards.
Excellent leadership, troubleshooting, and communication skills in dynamic field environments.
