The Junior Mechanical Fitter supports the assembly, installation, and maintenance of marine valves and pipework systems onboard vessels and in shipyard environments. This entry-level role involves hands-on mechanical work under the guidance of senior technicians or engineers, providing a foundation in marine mechanical systems and safe work practices.
Assist in the fitting and installation of valves, flanges, and pipe sections as per layout drawings or instructions.
Support valve positioning, gasket fitting, and bolt tightening using manual and pneumatic tools.
Participate in alignment and coupling of valves to piping systems.
Help with mechanical pre-checks, pressure/leak testing, and flushing operations.
Clean and prepare parts for assembly; assist with tagging and labeling.
Maintain tools, workspaces, and equipment in clean and safe condition.
Follow standard operating procedures and adhere to safety and quality guidelines.
Basic Mechanical Assembly: Learning how to assemble and fit marine valves and pipe joints using hand tools and basic workshop machinery.
Valve and Pipe Knowledge: Introduction to valve types (gate, globe, butterfly, check, etc.) and their roles in marine systems (cooling, ballast, fuel, bilge).
Installation Support: Understanding how to read simple layout drawings, measure and align components, and support fitting crews during system builds.
Testing Exposure: Participate in basic pressure/leak tests and learn safety requirements during test operations.
Worksite Safety: Understanding marine safety practices, PPE usage, confined space awareness, and hazard identification.
ITI, vocational diploma, or certification in Mechanical Fitting, Marine Engineering, or equivalent.
0–2 years of experience in mechanical fitting (internship, shipyard training, or vocational projects preferred).
Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand and power tools.
Willingness to learn, work in confined spaces, and follow instructions.
Physically fit and able to work in shipboard or drydock environments.
