Mechanical Design Engineer – Marine Equipment and Structures

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design and development of marine equipment and structural systems for vessels, offshore platforms, and shipyard applications. The ideal candidate will drive concept development, lead detailed design phases, and ensure technical excellence, regulatory compliance, and manufacturability. This role involves significant collaboration across engineering, production, and quality teams, as well as mentoring junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead the mechanical design of marine equipment such as davits, winches, cranes, hull structures, access systems, engine foundations, and mooring equipment.

    • Oversee preparation of 3D models and 2D detailed drawings using CAD software (SolidWorks, Siemens NX, AutoCAD).

    • Perform and review engineering calculations including strength, fatigue, FEA, weight, center of gravity, and structural integrity analysis.

    • Ensure all designs meet marine classification standards (ABS, DNV, LR, BV) and client specifications.

    • Drive technical reviews, design validations, and failure mode evaluations (FMEA/DFMEA).

    • Collaborate with project managers, production teams, and procurement to optimize designs for cost-effective manufacturing and integration.

    • Participate in R&D and new product development efforts for marine systems and structural components.

    • Develop and maintain design documentation, BOMs, and design change records.

    • Guide and mentor junior and mid-level design engineers, providing technical oversight and design best practices.

    • Interface with clients, vendors, and certification bodies during project execution and design approval processes.

Key Focus Areas:

    • Design Leadership: Own full-cycle mechanical design from concept through manufacturing, testing, and delivery.

    • Marine Compliance & Standards: Ensure rigorous compliance with international marine design codes and classification society regulations.

    • Advanced Analysis & Engineering Judgment: Apply FEA, hand calculations, and marine-specific design experience to solve complex problems.

    • System Integration: Design for seamless integration with marine systems such as propulsion, anchoring, deck machinery, and hull structures.

    • Mentorship & Team Development: Train and guide junior engineers, set design standards, and contribute to knowledge sharing.

Qualifications & Skills:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or Naval Architecture.

    • 7+ years of experience in mechanical design within marine, offshore, or shipbuilding sectors.

    • Expert-level proficiency in 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks, Siemens NX, AutoCAD) and design documentation.

    • Strong understanding of marine structural mechanics, materials, corrosion protection, and equipment integration.

    • Experience with structural analysis (FEA tools such as ANSYS, Abaqus, or equivalent).

    • In-depth knowledge of marine regulations and classification society requirements (IMO, SOLAS, ABS, DNV, Lloyd's).

    • Excellent project coordination, communication, and leadership skills.

Preferred Certifications / Experience:

    • Professional Engineer (PE) License or Chartered Engineer status (preferred but not mandatory).

    • Experience in shipyard, offshore platform design, or naval defense projects.

    • Familiarity with PLM/PDM tools and CMMS systems.

    • Exposure to ISO 9001, Lean Engineering, and DFMA principles.
