Job Title: Senior Aerospace Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Aerospace Mechanical Design Engineer to join our aerospace engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the design, development, and optimization of aerospace mechanical systems, structures, and components. You will work on high-impact projects, contributing to the design of innovative aerospace solutions, while collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure the integration of mechanical systems within larger aerospace platforms. As a senior engineer, you will also mentor junior and mid-level engineers, driving design excellence and ensuring that all engineering activities meet the highest standards of safety, performance, and manufacturability.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead Mechanical Design and Development:

    • Lead the design and development of advanced mechanical systems and components for aerospace applications, including propulsion systems, airframes, landing gear, control mechanisms, and more.
    • Oversee the complete design lifecycle from concept development, detailed design, and prototyping to testing and final implementation.
    • Provide engineering expertise in selecting materials, ensuring the mechanical systems meet performance requirements for stress, strain, fatigue, thermal, and vibration analysis.
  2. Advanced Engineering Analysis:

    • Conduct advanced simulations and analysis using tools such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and other specialized simulation software to validate designs under various operating conditions.
    • Perform complex structural, thermal, and mechanical simulations to ensure designs meet stringent aerospace standards.
    • Lead the integration of simulation results with physical test programs to validate designs and improve performance.
  3. Cross-Functional Team Leadership and Collaboration:

    • Collaborate closely with electrical, systems, and manufacturing engineers to ensure smooth integration of mechanical components into overall aerospace systems and subsystems.
    • Coordinate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and adhere to quality standards.
    • Act as a liaison between internal teams, customers, and suppliers to ensure that designs meet all project requirements, specifications, and deadlines.
  4. Prototyping and Testing:

    • Oversee the development and testing of mechanical prototypes to validate design concepts and ensure they meet all performance and safety standards.
    • Lead the analysis of test data, refine designs based on test results, and iterate to improve system performance and durability.
    • Ensure that the testing and validation processes comply with industry standards (e.g., FAA, MIL-SPEC, ISO) and that all results are thoroughly documented.
  5. Project Management and Technical Leadership:

    • Manage and lead technical projects, ensuring that milestones are met, resources are efficiently allocated, and project timelines are adhered to.
    • Drive innovation in design, proposing and implementing new methodologies, tools, and processes that enhance design accuracy, efficiency, and safety.
    • Lead design reviews, ensuring that all components meet required specifications and safety standards.
    • Mentor and train junior engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  6. Documentation and Compliance:

    • Prepare and maintain comprehensive design documentation, including detailed drawings, specifications, and technical reports, ensuring they are compliant with aerospace industry standards.
    • Ensure all designs, prototypes, and tests are documented thoroughly and meet regulatory requirements.
    • Manage the creation of technical documentation for patent applications, if applicable, and support intellectual property management.
  7. Continuous Improvement and Innovation:

    • Drive the continuous improvement of design processes, implementing best practices to enhance design quality, efficiency, and safety.
    • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends in aerospace design technologies, materials, and regulatory changes, and incorporate these advancements into design strategies.
    • Promote the adoption of new design technologies and innovations, such as advanced materials, additive manufacturing, and automation.

Key Focus Areas:

Aerodynamics:
  • Assist in optimizing aerodynamic systems for aircraft or spacecraft performance using modeling software.
Propulsion Systems:
  • Contribute to the development and testing of propulsion systems, focusing on efficiency and reliability.
Structural Engineering:
  • Design and test structural components to ensure strength, durability, and safety.
Systems Integration:
  • Support integration of mechanical, electrical, and avionics systems to ensure seamless operation.
Stress and Fatigue Analysis:
  • Perform analysis on components to ensure they can withstand operational stresses and fatigue.
Quality Assurance & Control:
  • Ensure adherence to industry standards through inspections, testing protocols, and quality control procedures.

Qualifications and Skills:

  1. Educational Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
    • 7+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering, with at least 3–5 years of experience in aerospace design.
  2. Technical Skills:

    • Proficiency in advanced CAD software (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks, or Creo) for 3D modeling, assembly, and technical drawings.
    • Extensive experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software for design validation.
    • Strong understanding of materials science, including aerospace materials, composites, and metals, and their applications in aerospace design.
    • Knowledge of aerospace industry standards (e.g., FAA, ASME, ISO, SAE) and regulatory compliance.
  3. Soft Skills:

    • Excellent leadership and project management skills, with the ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external partners.
    • Exceptional problem-solving abilities, with a proven track record of resolving complex design challenges.
    • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple design projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  4. Certifications (Preferred):

    • Professional Engineer (PE) certification or similar engineering certification.
    • Advanced certifications in CAD, FEA, or other relevant software tools.
    • Lean Six Sigma or project management certifications (e.g., PMP) are a plus.
