Job Title: Mass Calibration Engineer

Job Summary:

The Mass Calibration Engineer Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing the calibration of mass measurement systems and equipment used in manufacturing, testing, and quality control. This includes ensuring that mass measurement equipment is accurate, reliable, and compliant with regulatory standards and industry best practices. The manager will lead a team of engineers and technicians, ensuring that all calibration activities are performed efficiently, on schedule, and within regulatory requirements. This role also involves continuous improvement initiatives, optimizing calibration processes, and ensuring that the calibration systems meet the company’s operational and quality assurance standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Team Leadership and Management:

    • Lead and manage a team of calibration engineers and technicians, providing guidance, training, and development opportunities.
    • Set team goals, track performance, and conduct regular performance reviews to ensure alignment with organizational objectives.
    • Foster a collaborative and high-performance team culture focused on continuous improvement and adherence to quality standards.
  2. Calibration System Design and Optimization:

    • Oversee the design, implementation, and optimization of mass calibration systems and processes used in manufacturing, testing, and quality control.
    • Ensure that calibration systems meet industry standards and comply with relevant regulatory requirements (e.g., ISO, ASTM, NIST).
    • Develop and implement strategies to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and reliability of mass measurement systems and calibration procedures.
  3. Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance:

    • Ensure that all mass calibration activities comply with industry regulations, safety standards, and quality assurance requirements (e.g., ISO 9001, NIST traceability).
    • Lead efforts to maintain and improve compliance with internal and external audits related to calibration systems and processes.
    • Ensure that all calibration documentation, records, and reports are accurate, complete, and aligned with regulatory and industry standards.
  4. Process Management and Continuous Improvement:

    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in calibration processes to enhance efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and improve overall accuracy and reliability.
    • Evaluate current calibration practices, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions to optimize workflows and increase productivity.
    • Stay updated on industry advancements, best practices, and new calibration technologies to keep the calibration systems at the forefront of technological advancements.
  5. Project Management and Execution:

    • Lead and manage calibration projects from planning through execution, ensuring that all activities are completed on time, within budget, and to the required specifications.
    • Coordinate resources, timelines, and budgets for calibration-related projects, ensuring smooth integration with production schedules and operational goals.
    • Ensure the timely calibration of mass measurement equipment to support production schedules and minimize downtime.
  6. Troubleshooting and Technical Support:

    • Lead troubleshooting efforts for complex mass measurement and calibration system issues, ensuring that any technical challenges are addressed promptly to avoid production delays.
    • Provide technical expertise to other departments and support teams in resolving mass-related issues, including assisting with troubleshooting, equipment calibration, and process-related challenges.
    • Oversee the maintenance and troubleshooting of calibration equipment to ensure its proper functioning.
  7. Data Management and Reporting:

    • Develop and implement data management systems for calibration results, maintaining accurate and complete records of calibration procedures, results, and equipment performance.
    • Generate and analyze reports on calibration activities, providing insights and recommendations to senior management for decision-making.
    • Ensure that calibration results are communicated clearly and concisely to relevant departments, with a focus on actionable data to improve processes.
  8. Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:

    • Work closely with manufacturing, quality assurance, engineering, and production teams to ensure that mass calibration systems support operational and quality control requirements.
    • Collaborate with R&D and engineering teams to integrate new mass measurement equipment into existing calibration systems and ensure their compliance with standards.
    • Act as a liaison with external vendors, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders to ensure that calibration processes align with industry standards.
  9. Budget and Resource Management:

    • Develop and manage the budget for calibration activities, including staffing, equipment, and supplies.
    • Ensure the optimal use of resources, minimizing costs while maintaining high standards of accuracy and efficiency.
    • Track expenses and ensure that calibration-related costs are kept within budgetary constraints.

Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • Extensive knowledge of mass measurement systems and calibration processes, including best practices and industry standards.
  • Expertise in regulatory compliance related to mass calibration (e.g., NIST traceability, ISO 17025).
  • Strong understanding of quality assurance processes, including documentation, audits, and data integrity.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repairing mass measurement and calibration equipment.
  • Ability to lead and manage a team, providing coaching and development to junior staff.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify and address complex calibration issues.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in using calibration software and tools to collect and analyze data, as well as experience with data analysis software (e.g., Minitab, Excel).

Educational Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Certifications related to calibration, quality assurance, or regulatory compliance (e.g., Six Sigma, ISO 9001, NIST) are a plus.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Avionics and Flight Control Systems

  • Strategizing and overseeing the calibration processes for avionics and flight control systems, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and adherence to aviation standards.
  • Safety and Emergency Systems for Aircraft

  • Managing the calibration and testing of mass-related components in safety and emergency systems to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and operational safety.
  • Precision Instrumentation for Navigation, Communications, and Control

  • Leading the calibration and validation of precision instruments used in navigation, communication, and control systems for optimal performance and compliance.

Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in mass calibration, measurement systems, or quality control, with at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial role.
  • Proven experience in managing calibration processes, optimizing workflows, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Strong background in mass measurement equipment, including experience with troubleshooting, calibration, and testing of measurement systems.

Tools and Technologies:

  • Proficiency in using calibration equipment, including mass comparators, balances, and other mass measurement devices.
  • Familiarity with calibration software and systems for managing data and results.
  • Experience with statistical software tools (e.g., Minitab, Excel) for data analysis and reporting.
  • Knowledge of quality management software and systems (e.g., QMS, SAP) is a plus.
