Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Marine HVAC Technician – Installation and Repair is responsible for leading the installation, commissioning, repair, and optimization of HVAC systems onboard vessels and offshore platforms. This role involves executing and overseeing complex HVAC tasks, ensuring all systems operate reliably, efficiently, and in full compliance with international marine standards. The technician also plays a critical role in guiding junior staff, interfacing with engineering teams, and contributing to continuous system improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead the installation and commissioning of HVAC systems including air handlers, chillers, fans, ducting, compressors, VFDs, and automation systems in marine environments.

    • Conduct advanced diagnostics and perform mechanical and electrical repairs on system components including motors, sensors, controls, valves, thermostats, and evaporator coils.

    • Supervise and coordinate duct layout, routing, and insulation work, ensuring compliance with shipboard layout constraints and fire protection zones.

    • Interpret engineering drawings, schematics, P&IDs, and system documentation to guide fieldwork and installation planning.

    • Perform airflow balancing, refrigerant charging, leak testing, system tuning, and control verification during system startup and commissioning.

    • Ensure all work complies with marine regulations (IMO, SOLAS, ASHRAE, ABS, USCG) and safety practices for offshore/shipboard operations.

    • Lead troubleshooting and repairs in operational vessels or offshore units, including emergency response scenarios.

    • Maintain accurate technical documentation, service reports, and work permits; ensure all tools and test equipment are in calibrated condition.

    • Mentor junior and mid-level technicians, provide on-the-job training, and enforce quality and safety procedures.

    • Collaborate with engineering, commissioning, and QA/QC teams to resolve technical issues and implement design modifications.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. System Leadership & Technical Expertise
    – Lead complex HVAC installation and service tasks across multiple shipboard zones and technical spaces.

  2. Regulatory Compliance & Safety Assurance
    – Ensure full alignment with classification society and environmental standards during all installation and repair activities.

  3. Commissioning & System Performance
    – Optimize HVAC performance and environmental control through expert-level tuning and diagnostics.

  4. Team Supervision & Mentorship
    – Train and oversee less experienced technicians while maintaining schedule and technical quality.

Qualifications and Skills:

    • Diploma or technical degree in Marine Engineering, HVAC Technology, Mechanical Maintenance, or equivalent.

    • 6+ years of hands-on experience with HVAC installation and servicing, with at least 3 years in a marine or offshore setting.

    • Strong understanding of chilled water systems, direct expansion (DX) units, ventilation control, fire dampers, and refrigerant circuits.

    • Proficient with instruments and tools for refrigerant management, airflow measurement, multimeters, and control diagnostics.

    • Experience with PLC/BMS integration, fault diagnostics, and system balancing.

    • Knowledge of shipboard HVAC standards, hazardous area practices, and marine-specific challenges like corrosion and vibration control.

    • Familiarity with class rules and inspection requirements (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s, etc.).

    • Physically fit for onboard/offshore work (confined spaces, heights, rotating shifts).

    • Excellent communication, reporting, and team leadership abilities.

Preferred:

  • Certified in refrigerant handling (EPA Section 608 or equivalent).

  • STCW/BOSIET certification or previous offshore safety training.

  • Experience on LNG carriers, cruise ships, military vessels, or FPSOs.

  • Exposure to emergency HVAC systems, redundant cooling loops, and fire/gas control integration.
