The Junior Marine HVAC Technician – Installation and Repair assists in the installation, inspection, and basic repair of HVAC systems on marine vessels and offshore platforms. This entry-level role supports senior technicians in delivering reliable air conditioning, ventilation, and refrigeration services while learning to work within shipboard environments. The technician plays a hands-on role in ductwork assembly, component fitting, leak testing, and equipment maintenance under supervision.
Assist in the installation of HVAC equipment, including air handling units (AHUs), fan coil units, ductwork, chillers, and exhaust systems.
Support the routing and fitting of ventilation ducts, flexible connections, dampers, and insulation materials.
Participate in pre-startup checks, pressure/leak testing, and performance verification.
Help troubleshoot and replace basic components such as filters, belts, relays, valves, and control panels.
Assist in the mounting and alignment of compressors, pumps, and condenser units onboard vessels.
Follow layout drawings and installation diagrams under the guidance of senior technicians or engineers.
Support routine maintenance activities such as filter cleaning, refrigerant topping, and fan motor lubrication.
Adhere to marine safety standards during installation work, including confined space and electrical safety.
Maintain tools and equipment in proper working order and support site/workshop cleanliness and organization.
Document daily work progress and report challenges to senior technicians.
Installation Support
– Hands-on assistance with installing HVAC components in mechanical spaces, living quarters, and engine rooms.
Entry-Level Repair Tasks
– Involvement in simple repairs and replacements under the direction of more experienced team members.
Marine Worksite Readiness
– Learning procedures and practices specific to marine HVAC systems and offshore installations.
Safety and Technical Discipline
– Strict adherence to safety rules, tool usage guidelines, and technical quality under supervision.
Technical certificate or diploma in HVAC, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Technology, or equivalent.
0–2 years of experience in HVAC installation, maintenance, or mechanical repair (internships or apprenticeships acceptable).
Basic understanding of HVAC system components, ductwork, and refrigerant circuits.
Familiarity with the use of hand tools, drills, gauges, meters, and basic HVAC service equipment.
Ability to read and follow technical drawings, layout diagrams, and work instructions.
Willingness to work in shipboard or offshore environments, including confined and elevated areas.
Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
Previous exposure to marine HVAC systems or experience in shipyards or offshore projects.
Basic knowledge of ventilation standards and HVAC installation codes.
Awareness of environmental and safety protocols for working with refrigerants or pressurized systems.
Valid STCW safety training or offshore survival certificate is a plus.
