Loop Testing Technician – Ground Equipment

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Loop Testing Technician is responsible for executing comprehensive loop checks on ground-based systems, verifying functionality and signal integrity between control panels and field devices. This role ensures instrumentation loops—including analog, digital, and control signals—are properly installed, calibrated, and documented according to engineering specifications. The technician works both independently and within commissioning teams during system startup and validation phases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instrumentation Loop Testing:
Conduct end-to-end loop checks on analog (e.g., 4-20 mA, RTD, thermocouple) and digital (DI/DO) signals from field instruments to PLC/DCS systems.

  • Wiring Verification & Troubleshooting:
Identify and resolve signal path issues, such as incorrect terminations, open circuits, reversed polarity, and grounding faults.

  • System Calibration Support:
Simulate sensor outputs and actuate valves/devices to verify control system responses during commissioning.

  • Technical Documentation:
Review and update loop drawings, termination schedules, and test reports. Record as-built conditions and flag any discrepancies.

  • Testing Coordination:
Collaborate with control system engineers, electricians, and QA teams to schedule and prioritize loop testing sequences.

  • Compliance & Safety:
Adhere to electrical safety protocols and ensure compliance with industry standards (ISA, NEC, IEC).

  • Mentoring Entry-Level Staff:
Provide guidance to junior technicians and ensure proper testing procedures are followed in the field.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Loop Integrity & Signal Quality:
Ensure all control and monitoring loops are verified for signal accuracy and operational readiness.

  2. Documentation & Traceability:
Maintain accurate test records and ensure all loop completions are traceable and conform to commissioning requirements.

  3. Field Coordination:
Act as a key point of contact for loop testing during integrated system testing and startup phases.

  4. Problem Resolution:
Apply troubleshooting skills to resolve wiring, configuration, or instrumentation-related issues effectively.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or diploma in Instrumentation, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field

  • 2–5 years of hands-on experience in I&C loop testing or commissioning for ground systems or industrial automation

  • Proficient in using multimeters, loop calibrators, HART communicators, and test documentation tools

  • Ability to read and interpret loop drawings, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and termination schedules

  • Working knowledge of control systems (PLC/DCS), sensors, actuators, and field instrumentation

  • Strong communication and coordination skills in a field team environment

  • Familiarity with applicable industry standards (e.g., ISA, IEEE, NEC, NFPA)
