Roles & Responsibilities

Job Title: Expert-Level Level Designer (Lead / Principal Level Designer)

Summary:

As a Lead or Principal Level Designer, you will define and drive the level design strategy across the entire game or studio. You will lead and inspire the level design team, ensure consistency and cohesion in level quality, and collaborate closely with creative directors and leadership to shape the overall player experience on a macro scale.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set and uphold the vision and quality standards for level design across all game content.

  • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of level designers, providing clear direction, constructive feedback, and fostering professional growth.

  • Pioneer innovative level design techniques, develop new tools, and optimize pipelines to enhance efficiency and creativity.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with creative, narrative, technical, and production leadership to align level design with overall game vision.

  • Participate actively in recruitment, onboarding, and long-term strategic planning for the design team.

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of professional experience in level design, including leadership roles on major game projects.

  • Proven track record of shipping multiple successful titles with significant design contributions.

  • Strong strategic mindset with excellent decision-making and cross-disciplinary collaboration skills.

  • Deep understanding of player psychology, accessibility considerations, and replayability mechanics.

  • Demonstrated success in leading and nurturing high-performing design teams.

  • Unreal Engine (Blueprints, World Composition)

  • Unity

Level Layout & Blockout Tools:

  • ProBuilder

  • BSP Tools

  • SketchUp

Scripting & Visual Programming:

  • Unreal Blueprints

  • Unity C# scripting

  • Flow Graphs / Visual Scripting Tools

Design Documentation & Collaboration:

  • Miro

  • Confluence

  • Photoshop (for level maps and visual aids)

Design Knowledge:

  • Gameplay flow and pacing optimization

  • Player progression systems and player guidance techniques

  • Environmental storytelling integration

  • Technical optimization, modular design, and performance considerations
